Job Title: WATSAN Technician

Location: Kano
Contract: Fixed term contract and Working hours according to Nigerian law

Overview

  • MSF has been active in Katsina since February 2021 after carrying an exploratory mission that end up with an opening of the project under the Emergency-Cell.
  • Currently, MSF is running 1 ITFC (Inpatient Therapeutic Feeding Centre) in Katsina in the KofarSauri PHCC and 5 ATFC (Ambulatory Therapeutic Feeding Centre) including 4 in Jibia LGA (Magama, Daddara, GubiMagaria and Riko) and 1 in Katsina (KofarMarusa).
  • There is ongoing plan to implement additional ATFC in Mashi and Mani LGA.

Accountabilities / Responsibilities (non-exhaustive list)

  • Supporting the Logistics Manager in the implementation, monitoring, maintaining, and trouble-shooting of Water Hygiene Sanitation activities and infrastructure in the project according to MSF protocols, standards and procedures in order to improve health and living conditions of the target population.
  • Carrying out tasks directly related to the Watsan activities such as construction and maintenance of infrastructures in the project according to MSF protocols and standards concerning the operation of water supply, waste management and excreta disposal, hy giene and infection control
  • Ensuring the cleaning and maintenance of the Watsan structures and when applicable, of the medical facilities
  • Identifying, recruiting, training and supervising daily labourers or hygiene agents for Watsan activities
  • Informing the Watsan Supervisor/Base /facility log of any difficulties, anomalies and problems that may affect the normal functioning of activities and tasks in his/her area of responsibility
  • Assisting the Watsan Supervisor / Log base in Watsan data collection and reporting, as well as maintaining updated files and records of assigned project activities
  • Being responsible for equipment, tools, and consumables, verifying that they are safely used and maintained. Reporting to the supervisor any need of renewal and them weekly/monthly consumption
  • Under the Log Manager’s responsibility, implementing and ensuring the proper functioning of the health facilities and structures in matters linked to maintenance and improvement of waste management (segregation by proper usage of color coded bins, storage and transportaiton to waste zone areas), sanitation and hygiene, water management, stock and supply, etc.) in accordance with MSF standards and protocols
  • Under the Log Manager’s supervision, participate in the clinic Hygiene Committee with MSF or/and MoH collaboration to support waste segregation and proper sanitation/hygiene practices in MSF supported clinics (Unguwa Uku, Tudun Fulan and MCH).
  • Collecting all waste from MSF-supported clinics and ensure the proper management of needles and glass waste (sharp waste).
  • Reporting to Logistics Manager any problems and issues as they arise and any incidents that may compromise the safety of the clinic.
  • Submitting and updating basic follow-up monthly reports and tools (biomedical maintenance chronogramme, information on waste management).
  • Participate to sanitation audits under the direct supervision of the Log Manager.
  • Reproting: providing monthly report of his activities stating achievement, challenges and action plan.
  • Complying with all the safety rules regarding the use of the incinerator, taking care of his/her own safety, particularly by wearing provided protection equipment. Including keeping the incinerator in good working order.
  • Managing the water of the entire clinic facility including ofiice and guest house
  • On a daily basis prepare chlorine solution and conduct daily water test to ensure residual chlorine/pH levels are to standard and ensure the record are keep and Analyzed monthly
  • Ensuring that the installation and maintenance of the functional spaces of medical offices are inadequate conditions
  • Maintaining and servicing the MSF responsible premises including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, carpentry and small repairs.
  • In collaboration with the clinical team, Support Logsup and Logbase on basic maintenance and upkeep of all biomedical equipment (sterilization room and cold chain)
  • Support Logbase and ensure adequate fuel stock available for generator at clinic. Cleaning and securing generator and diesel storage area making sure service timing is respected according to MSF standards. Recording running hours and services in logbook.

Requirements
Education:

  • Technical certification or proven background, desirable specialization in water and sanitation
  • Organizational abilities

Experience:

  • Previous experience in technical work and WATSAN.

Languages:

  • English language essential, local language desirable.
