Action Against Hunger works to save lives by combating hunger and diseases that threaten the lives of vulnerable communities, through nutrition, food security, water and sanitation, health and advocacy. We are recruiting to fill the positions below:     Job Title: Nutrition Officer Location: Damaturu, Yobe Job Summary

  • This position is based in Yobe State and will work under the direct supervision of the Nutrition Deputy Project Manager.
  • The successful candidate will play a key role in the implementation of community health groups (CHGs) within the community for each health facility targeted by the CMAM component.
  • He/she will conduct health capacity assessments and also ensure the functionality and linkage between community nutritional screening and health facilities.
  • The Nutrition Officer is also required to represent Action Against Hunger program within the communities.
Specific Tasks and Responsibilities
  • Participate in the development of joint activity work plans with key stakeholders in the state and within Action Against Hunger.
  • Establish and foster linkage between the health facility and the community in the respective catchment areas.
  • Plan and participate in training of State Ministry of Health staff on CMAM and IYCF through various approaches such as on job training, continuous nutrition education and theoretical trainings.
  • Building the capacity of the Ministry of Health staff (all levels) and community volunteers (CVs) attached to the health facilities who attend to beneficiaries in the CMAM programs.
  • Orientation and training of community based health promoters.
  • Conduct community mobilization and sensitization for public health and nutrition during day to day nutrition activities, calendar days and nutrition days.
  • Support and build capacity of MOH in the compilation, preparation and submission of accurate and timely nutrition reports.
  • Implement, organize, follow-up and report on capacity building, training and nutrition screening activities.
  • Coordinate the LGA census for PLW and Neighbour Women (NW) grouping at LGA level.
  • On a monthly basis, reviews flip chart lesson plans with nutrition assistants and health promoters and ensure they understand the information well and can teach the information in a participatory manner.
  • Ensures close collaboration with the facility staff, Nutrition Focal Person (NFP), health promoters, community mobilizers, hygiene promoters, CGVs, CVs and other community actors to ensure that the community activities are linked to the activities at the health facility.
  • Provide timely coherent analysis of the community situation in relation to nutrition, health, food security and livelihood and water and sanitation situation to the program team.
  • Prepare care group monthly report using the information provided by nutrition assistants and health promoters.
Requirements The successful candidate will;
  • Have a minimum of bachelor's degree in Health, Nutrition, Nursing or related field.
  • Have a minimum of 2 years working experience within humanitarian contexts, with at least 1 year in conflict/insecure contexts including community mobilization.
  • Be able and willing to frequently travel to villages and stay at the field.
  • Have the capacity to supervise and coach health workers.
  • Be professional, motivated, flexible and culturally sensitive.
  • Possess excellent team, budget, project management and representation competencies.
  • Be proficient in statistical softwares (Microsoft Office package, SPSS, SPHINX, STATA, EPI Info, ENA for SMART, GIS, etc.)
  • Be committed to Action Against Hunger mission, values and policy.
  • Be fluent in English and other local languages (Kanuri, Fulani, Hausa).
  • Have previous NGO experience in managing mobilization in different interventions (i.e. cash transfers, wash, Nutrition).

  • Completes a broad variety of administrative tasks for the country director including:
  • Support preparation of external correspondence such as official letters and reports, survey or communication documents dissemination.
  • Support with the regular review of Country strategy strategic plan of action and organizational culture change management project updates
  • Support in the arrangement of travel, meetings and events on behalf of the director, where needed in collaboration with other departments
  • Support internal communication as need be with SMT, other departments and mission field offices in order to improve internal communication and harmonization of level of information.
  • Attend external meeting with or on behalf of the country director and prepare minutes or key highlights of the meeting for dissemination.
Provide Executive Support to the SMT and Regional Team:
  • Support the preparation of senior management team (SMT) and monthly coordination meeting (MCM) meeting’s agenda, attend and prepare the meeting minutes for sharing with SMT members, support to collating information for sitreps and other updates or reports for HQ
  • Provide administrative support to individual SMT and regional team members as needed and time allows
  • Follow up with individual SMT and regional team members on action points
  • Maintenance of files on key topics as required
  • Support editing and layout of donor reports and communication documents where requested
  • Attend external meeting with or on behalf of SMT/regional team members and prepare minutes or key highlights of the meeting for dissemination
Requirements
  • Master’s Degree in Project Management, Internal Relations, Social Sciences, Health/Nutrition, Development or other related field;
  • Excellent organizational skills;
  • Excellent written and spoken English;
  • Proficient in MS Office Applications;

Benefits
  • Action Against Hunger provides accommodation & per diem in country, but candidates are encouraged to seek their own funding to facilitate flights, lodging and food.
  • The intern will be able to use the regular Action Against Hunger program transport and movements of cars to do the primary data collection.
  • Action Against Hunger will support the visa
  • The intern will need to have active health insurance, and cover visa costs and flight travel.
  • S/He will also need to bring his or her own computer. Action Against Hunger will support visa process.
