Job Title: Senior EHS Officer

Location: Calabar / Calaro Estate, Cross River

Key Internal Relationships: GM, AGM, GEM, Senior Mill Manager, SEM, Sustainability Lead, Estate Management
Geographic scope: Plantation Estates and POM- Nigeria Operation (Biase Plantations & EYOP Industries)

Position Purpose - Summary
The purpose of this position is to:

  • Drive successful Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) outcomes, foster a performance driven and positive assurance culture and provide guidance and subject matter expertise.
  • Lead the development and implementation of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) policies, standards, management systems and programs. Working with the BU’s line management and support function, to effectively manage and continuously improve and align the goals and objectives in compliance with applicable Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) policies, procedures, governmental and global standards.
  • Measure, communicate and report country/region Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) performance against agreedimprovement targets, initiate corrective actions as appropriate and follow up effectiveness.
  • Developing & leading the company's Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) advisory team, in order to ensure that Wilmar Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) requirements are strictly enforced across Plantation and Factories in respective region.

  • Develop, achieving consensus and buy-in from Country/ Region leadership and implement EHS strategy that delivers strategic objectives across all region of operations.
  • In conjunction with the Plantation and Technical Heads, develops the annual regional Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) KPIs and improvement plans. Develops performance standards and recommends the methods of accomplishing those standards for the region. Highlights key improvement opportunities.

  • In consultation, develop a full set of practical standards that are accepted and owned by management and drive the implementation of those standards and measure progress
  • Drive to operationalize these policies and standards and work toward consistency in our approach to EHS in all our Wilmar and its subsidiary.
  • Adopt and/or develop best practices for Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) management / Performance and roll out across the region
  • Provides Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) expertise and recommendations to the site operational leaders. Develop or acquires custom tools to address specific issues.

Monitoring, Verification and Reporting:

  • To report on EHS trends and statistics, analyse performance, identify areas of specific risk and develop and implement programs to mitigate these risks or address performance issues.
  • Monitor, communicate and report country/region Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) performance against agreedimprovement targets, initiate corrective actions as appropriate and follow up effectiveness
  • Continue to develop an open reporting culture (quantity and quality) supported by Enablon
  • Conducts or oversees investigations into high severity incidents and ensures the quality and outcomes of investigations continuously improve at each facility. Responds and assists in the management, investigation and follow up of any major emergency situation.
  • Facilitate implementation of assurance processes and tools by actively visiting work locations and sites to assess the risk and effectiveness of control and assurance practices in place.
  • Coordinate Incident Review process and ensure sharing and learning across the business.

Risk Management:

  • Ensures that Risk Assessments/ JSEA in Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) are performed to minimize or eliminate accidents, asset losses, and environmental issues that might cause harm to one of the company’s employees, contractors, visitors, assets, or reputation. Provides cost effective alternatives and solutions to unacceptable risks surfaced across all operation areas.
  • Develop a Risk Management culture where risk is consistently identified and controlled, and monitor the effectiveness particularly for any significant changes or major decisions, and provide advice and support
  • Continue the focus on high risk work and broaden the scope to align to the common fatality circumstances we face in our business

Capability requirements
Qualifications:

  • Relevant tertiary education (minimum Bachelor’s Degree) in any discipline preferably in the related field of Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Additional EHS certifications like NEBOSH IGC, NEBOSH IDip, ISO Certifications, ISPON, etc..

Experience:

  • Minimum 10 years related experience, to sufficiently support the job purpose and content of this role, including
  • 10+ years of either EHS experience, with minimum of 5+ years working in a management capacity
  • 5+ years of industry relevant experience including EHS role at Plantation/ food/ materials processing manufacturing facilities.
