One of the reasons advanced for the overthrow of the Gowon Regime was its failure to honour the promise to hand over power.

The regime could not keep to the proposed date for return to civil rule.

Other reasons were as follows:

1. Mismanagement

2. Disillusionment with the government

3. Disregard of public opinion

4. Port congestion

5. Indecision of the part of the government

6. Issue of 1973 census

7. High rate of corruption.

In the First Republic,politics in the Northern region was dominated by the NPC.
The Northern People's Congress (NPC) was founded in October 1951. It sprang up from the northern cultural organization known as Jamiyy or Mutanen Arewa which was founded in 1949. NPC was highly dominated by the Hausa Fulani. Throughout its existence, it controlled the northern regional government. In the centre, it some times formed coalition government with NCNC.

UMBC and NEPU were some of its oppsing political parties in the northern regional house of assembly.

The military Head of State during the Third Republic was General Ibrahim Babangida.

The regime established two political parties, NRC and SDP. All the states had elected governors as well as state legislators. Every local government in the country was also run by elected chairmen and Councillors. That was the time Ibrahim Babangida took up the name ''Mr President.''
