By offering Solar Power as a Service, Lumos offers homes and small businesses a simple and affordable way to pay for electricity in small installments using their mobile phones We are recruiting to fill the position below:     Job Title: Legal & Compliance Officer Location: Lagos Job Purpose

  • Legal & Compliance Officer will support the Legal and Compliance Counsel should provide accurate and timely counsel to executives on a variety of legal topics
  • Role holder must be objective minded in review and evaluation of compliance within the company
  • Will work in conjunction with the Legal & Compliance Counsel to ensure behaviors within the organization meet defined standards and guidelines.
  • Role holder will be responsible for supporting the Legal & Compliance Counsel in ensuring overall company operation is in compliance and adherence to national & international laws, rules & regulations of regulatory agencies, legal & ethical standards, internal business code of conduct & practices, professional standards and company policies & procedures
  • Will work in close association with the Legal & Compliance Counsel to provide guidance on corporate governance and regulatory compliance while ensuring the highest quality of legal advice is provided in the most efficient manner.
Key Accountabilities
  • Assist the Legal & Compliance Counsel to develop and follow-up on Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for current and potential partners and/or stakeholders
  • In consultation with the Legal & Compliance Counsel, liaise with company secretary on all company’s secretarial matters and ensure company’s compliance as required under Nigeria company law
  • Maintain an up to date database for all legal & compliance matters, to ensure prompt reporting of all mandatory and periodic legal obligations
  • In conjunction with the Legal & Compliance Counsel, give accurate and timely counsel to executives in a variety of legal topics (labor law, NCC regulations, corporate finance etc.)
  • Assist in communicating and negotiating with external parties (regulators, external counsel, public authority etc.).
  • Assist in drafting and solidifying agreements, contracts and other legal documents to ensure the company’s full legal rights
  • Assist in the process of recovering company assets or its monetary value from defaulting customers
  • Effectively carrying out any other relevant activity in support of the overall company objective as may be assigned from time to time by Legal & Compliance Counsel
  • Responsible for assisting the Legal &Compliance Counsel in developing and implementing an effective legal compliance system.
  • Work in conjunction with the Legal & Compliance Counsel to proactively evaluate business activities to assess legal & compliance risks, identify potential areas of vulnerability & risks, develop corrective action plans for resolution and risk mitigation strategies to protect Lumos Nigeria, its assets and stakeholders against potential lawsuits
  • Support the Legal & Compliance Counsel in developing systems for handling crisis or compliance violation and implements plans or modes of responding to alleged violations of policies, procedures, codes of conduct, rules and regulations
  • Assist in carrying out periodic audits on processes & practices to identify improvement areas and provide guidance on how to avoid repeat of similar instances in the future
  • Advise on creating sound internal controls and monitor adherence to them
  • Work with the Legal & Compliance Counsel and with respective Functions and Departments to develop, revise and maintain policies & procedures for general operations, to prevent unethical, illegal or improper conduct
  • In consultation with the Legal & Compliance Counsel, liaise with external lawyer as per retainership agreement
  • Assist in developing and coordinating the deployment of training for employees on Legal, regulatory, compliance & industry practices as it affects the company
Educational Qualifications & Functional / Technical Skills
  • First Degree in Law, Member of the Nigeria Bar Association (NBA)
  • Professional certification in legal, audit or compliance area (e.g. Certified Compliance & Ethics Professional (CCEP)) will be an added advantage.
Relevant Experience:
  • Minimum 3 years proven experience in a legal and compliance role
  • Demonstrated experience in a leadership role (minimum at supervisory / coordination level)
  • Experience in risk management, is a must
  • Good knowledge of corporate practice
  • Experience in drafting contracts and commercial agreement
  • Familiarity with industry practices and professional standards
  • Practical Project Management experience
