Job Purpose

  • Career opportunity exists for a highly skilled and result driven Environment & Safety Controller in Gateway brewery reporting to the Environment & Safety Manager.
  • The incumbent will lead in the execution of the Water Treatment Operation and Yeast Drying production plan, executing quality control and analyses, the carrying out of autonomous maintenance tasks and the resolution of production problems.
  • Will provide support to operational and line management to ensure the functioning of a comprehensive and professional Occupational Health and Safety System; ensuring compliance to Safety systems, standards and work practices to achieve targets set for the VPO Safety Pillar and Safety KPI’s.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Briefs section heads and workers regarding the functions and responsibilities of health and safety representatives and committees. 
  • Training and coaching VPO Safety Pillar requirements and Standards, induction and FPA to all employees and contractors. 
  • Prepares standards and documentation for VPO Safety Pillar C2C audits and reviews. 
  • Conducts Safety monitoring audits. 
  • Conducts Safety coaching to employees on safe behaviours. 
  • Conducts pre-commissioning checks on new plant. 
  • Audits critical job policies and procedures and addresses non-compliance with relevant persons. 
  • Identifies and assesses training needs and addresses same. 
  • Identifies organizes and conducts safety training required within or outside the organisation, for various sections. 
  • Ensures optimum use of Safety App to raise Safety Incidents and Observations
  • Performs Loss and waste analysis on Safety Incident and Observations. 
  • Develops an action plan to close SIO's based on priority    
  • Performs safety monitoring using the supervisor checklists
  • Identifies Root causes and agree systemic loop closure action plans          
  • Maintains updated records of all incidents in Credit 360
  • Develops and shares safety Alerts
  • Performs Operational Work Diagnosis for scheduled/selected activities as per VPO Safety Pillar requirements   
  • Interpret and implement production plan for shift  
  • Monitor production processes 
  • Summons for assistance in the event of a malfunction being beyond their team’s scope of authority to repair or resolve.
  • Maintain housekeeping standards in their area of operation.
  • Manage the team to improve process quality and productivity 
  • Ensure and maintain a safe and healthy work environment  
  • Co-ordinate autonomous maintenance and cleaning

  • Apply problem solving and decision making techniques and principles 
  • Facilitate team problem solving
  • Conducts induction for contractors. 
  • Investigates, compiles and distributes accident/incident reports.
  • Shares, distributes and facilitates reviews and discussions on Safety alerts and toolbox talks.
  • Ensures corrective steps to ensure compliance with VPO Safety Pillar requirements.
  • Ensure requirements of all 23 Blocks of the Safety Pillar are implemented
  • Performs Risk assessments as per the VPO Standards 
  • Ensures all employees are aware of all work hazards & all control measures
  • Ensures Safety Incidents and observations are identified, reported and closed.
  • Ensures all Safety Incidents and Observations are captured in Credit360
  • Manage the BTS and Yeast Drying plants and lead the team according to VPO whilst ensuring safe working practices are adhered to. 
  • Stop any machine in the plant should a serious malfunction occur or if safety is being compromised. 

Qualifications, Experience and Skills Required

  • B.Sc / HND in Engineering or Science related discipline
  • 2 - 3 years in Safety function in a production environment
  • Understanding of ABInBev Safety, Health & Environmental Management Systems (VPO)
  • Certificate of Competency in Safety Health and Environment from an accredited institution.
