The Institute for Humanitarian Studies & Social Development (IHSD) is Africa’s foremost professional institution of higher learning and development-consultancy institute; providing Alternative – Quality Education in the humanitarian, social and non- profit sectors. The Institute was officially inaugurated in August 2010 to complement the efforts of the Government and the United Nations by promoting and encouraging volunteerism, professionalism, intellectualism, skilled man-power, values, and integrity in the Humanitarian and Non Profit sector in Nigeria.
With over a decade of experience in capacity building, the institute is in active partnership with the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) where it is involved in joint training and humanitarian programs in Nigeria.
We are recruiting to fill the positions below:
Job Title: Program Assistant (Intern)
Location: Abuja
Reports to: Registrar or Programs Officer/Coordinator
Job Description
- The Program Assistant will support the coordination efforts of the Program Officer to ensure the smooth running of Institute projects and is completed on time, and within budget.
Responsibilities
- Support the Program Officer to maintain adequate records of all documentation and correspondence with donors
- Work with the project staff to ensure that program quality standards are maintained and that programs adhere to institute’s and donors’ requirements, including retention of relevant documents
- Provide administrative support to the Registrar/Program Coordinator as requested
- Track program reporting requirements and help ensure that report deadlines are met
- Ensure that requests for payment and other logistics tasks are tracked accurately and submitted to the management team.
- Support in general logistics, planning, and hosting of training amongst other duties assigned.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, or equivalent job experience
- 2-3 years of experience in programmatic support are an advantage
- Proven track record of working with a project team composed of technical experts, programs, and finance staff.
- Proficiency in writing and editing letters, reports, and documents

Job Title: Human Resources (HR) Assistant (Intern)
Location: Abuja
Reports to: Registrar or Programs Officer/ Coordinator
Job Purpose
- The HR assistant manages all HR related activities including selection, recruitment, posting, training, and development of locally recruited staff identifies skills and competency gaps needed to achieve operational demands.
- Assists or provides expert input and guidance to the managers, and all actors involved in the process of staffing and budget reviews, recruitment, and appointment of staff.
Responsibilities
- Participate in the preparation of the annual operations program review submissions with a focus on staffing requirements (i.e. skills and competencies) of the operation.
- Participate in the review of the local training needs of the staff, assisting or making appropriate proposals to meet the identified needs of re-profiling and development.
- Ensure that the members of the Institute have a sound awareness of staff rules and regulations (including the Code of Conduct) and is aware of its rights and obligations.
- Oversee and provide guidance in the process of recruitment and selection of new staff by ensuring timely advertisement and the filling of vacancies.
- Supervise maintenance of the personnel records of the institute staff and members.
- Personnel administration related functions.
- Keep records of members and graduates of IHSD; follow-up on members where need be.
- Support training administration and secretariat oversight, produce training material
- Provides expertise and guidance to all staff in the office: supervisors, supervisees as well as all other colleagues in the office who may need HR advice.
- Brief newly arrived staff on related administrative formalities and ensure all arrangements are expedited in relation to their accreditations.
Minimum Qualifications and Professional Experience Required
- Education: University degree in Human Resources Management /Administration, Law, or similar disciplines.
- Job experience: Minimum of 2 years of relevant experience with Advanced University/Master’s degree (4 years with University/Bachelor’s Degree).

Job Title: Communications Officer (Intern)
Location: Abuja
Registrar or Programs Officer/Coordinator
Job Purpose
- To ensure that IHSD has effective internal and external communications processes, which maintain coherence inside the organization and raise the profile of the organization externally in ways that are consistent with project brand.
- Working Relationships: The Communication Officer will report directly to the Registrar or Program Officer/Coordinator.
Key Task and Responsibilities
Production and dissemination of organizational public relations materials:
- The Communications Officer has overall responsibility for developing and maintaining materials, using diverse media to effectively communicate IHSD’s mission, vision, and main messages to key audiences and stakeholders, staff members, and community beneficiaries.
Precisely, the Communication Officer will do the following:
- Contributes to the development and implementation of a plan to successfully promote IHSD’s programs and services
- Coordinate the development of Annual Reports with support from the Registrar and contribute to the development of its content.
- Coordinates the production of the IHSD quarterly newsletter and other general updates according to the communication, humanitarian, and advocacy objectives. For this purpose, gathers information (including interviews) with staff, partners, and beneficiaries.
- Packages and disseminates IHSD’s reports, case studies, tools, and other materials to maximize their use.
- Maintains an updated database and internal communication system and ensure that training and other activities of IHSD are given widest social medial publicity.
Website Management: The Communications Officer has overall responsibility for managing the IHSD’s website along with other IT providers. This will include:
- Update the content of the website monthly to ensure dissemination of the organizational progress and achievement
- Work with other units and teams to update all IHSD’s in content development for upload on the website.
- Setting targets, monitoring, and reporting on website usage and provide reports to the Registrar on a bi-annual basis.
- Monitoring the implementation of content and branding guidelines.
- Liaising with webmaster as required.
- Proactively seeking new resources where IHSD and its work should feature.
Relations with Media: The Communications Officer will work collaboratively and develop other appropriate approaches towards the achievement of IHSD’s strategic targets as follows:
- Develop and maintain a detailed database of media organizations including print, radio, and TV media outlets.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships and communication channels with mass media representatives, news services, editors, etc. to encourage accurate and favorable reporting of IHSD’s activities.
- Source and secure media opportunities for IHSD to showcase its work during key commemoration days such as International Humanitarian Day, Children’s Day; International Women’s Day; 16th Days of Activism; International Youth Day, etc.
- Prepare news releases and other public briefing notes in relation to key developments in IHSD’s work
- Coordinate with state office level staff regarding local-level communication and advocacy activities; distribute materials to media and coordinate timely responses to media requests
- Coordinate media exposure at IHSD’s funded or supported events in collaboration with staff leading on the content of the events.
- Mentor other IHSD staff, providing advice and ideas for how to more effectively incorporate media approaches in relevant projects;
- Represent IHSD at relevant meetings and events.
Social Media Engagement: The communications officer will work with individual staff to increase IHSD’s social media presence to ensure improvements and remain useful to our stakeholders:
- Develop creative content for posting on IHSD’s Facebook and other accounts
- Update all social media outlet at least twice a day with routine information about IHSD’s activities
- Respond to comments and request coming from social media postings
- During special events coordinate the use of social media for reporting on the activities with other individual staff
Requirements
- A B.Sc or HND in Mass Communication or Media Studies
- At least 1-3 years’ experience in a similar position
- Highly organized and detail orientated.
- Can work under intense pressure without losing focus.
- Strong skills in time management and ability to meet tight deadlines
- Self-motivated and can work with minimum supervision
- Extensive writing ability
- Excellent Oral communication skills

Job Title: Programs Officer / Coordinator
Location: Abuja
Reports to: Registrar/CEO
Job Type: Full Time
Job Purpose
- The Programs Officer/Coordinator will coordinate the development and implementation of quality programs and activities in accordance with IHSD’s requirements. S/He will be responsible for providing direction, coordination, and support to the Program teams. The Programs Officer will ensure the smooth implementation of projects, activities, and achievement of program objectives and outcomes.
Working Relationships:
- The Programs Officer will report directly to and work closely with the Registrar. S/He will supervise program team members.
Roles and Responsibilities
Program Implementation:
- Coordinate the development of new ideas and projects to meet the Institute’s objectives, goals, mission, and vision
- Supervise and support the Programs Team Members by providing technical and strategic guidance, program direction, input and feedback
- Serve as technical lead on the development of project proposals and concept notes for new program ideas in collaboration with Fundraising and Development Officer
- Support the office of the Registrar in the coordination of trainings, development of training calendar, and liaise with different resource persons and prospective students where need be.
- Ensure that course programs and interventions are tailored to meet the needs of our target beneficiaries.
- Provide management oversight for ongoing course programs, ensuring that all course programs and other programs and activities are managed to budget and achieve the planned results on time based on organizational policy and requirements
- Support the Coordination of members and fellows of the Institute including state chapters and IHSD Alumni Association.
- Ensure improved social media content and ONLINE marketing of all training and programs.
- Identify new partners and collaborators and engage in partnership building.
- Coordinate the development of annual organizational programs work plans and budget
- Provide regular program and operational/financial reports to the Registrar
- Maintain and strengthen relationships with program partners and stakeholders
- Oversee program/project-related monitoring, evaluation and learning process
- Report monitoring and evaluation findings to the Registrar and recommend changes to enhance the program, as appropriate
- Develop technical documents including course outlines, training guides, manuals, booklets, etc. to aid the implementation of programs at all levels
- Review and approve all organizational program reports submitted to external partners and stakeholders.
Staff Management and Teamwork:
- Stand in for the Registrar or other colleagues as required.
- Facilitate shared learning and joint initiatives regarding programs and activities implementation
- Support the development and realization of program monitoring, evaluation, and learning as well as knowledge management outcomes by promoting documentation and sharing of lessons learned
- Work with the Registrar to cultivate and manage relationships and partnerships
- Nurture an open and collaborative work environment that encourages learning, productivity, accountability, flexibility, respect, non-discrimination, and communication
- In consultation with the Registrar, recruit, interview and select qualified program staff
- Work closely with the Registrar and HR Officer to carry out annual performance appraisals of program team members and develop capacity building plans
Requirements
- A Degree in International Relations, Conflict Resolution, Peace Studies, International Development, or related field. Advanced degree and/or additional specialization or the professional certificate serves as an advantage.
- Minimum 3-5 years of program management experience required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including public speaking, policy development and fluent written/spoken English
- Experience working with the development sector required
- Experience working and building collaborative relations with, members of civil society, government, academia, and the private sector
- Demonstrates ability to take initiative as well as develop and implement programs
- Ability to think and plan strategically
- Ability to lead, inspire, manage, coach and mentor staff at both an individual and collective levels
- An experience working with a training institution or educational consultancy firm would be an added advantage.
- Must be very good in social media marketing and other computer applications
- Must be good in content development
- Skill in web design /management and communication will be an added advantage.
