Danish Refugee Council (DRC) is a Danish international non-governmental organisation, which promotes and supports durable solutions to the problems faced by refugees and internally displaced
people all over the world. DRC is present in more than 30 conflict territories around the world assisting displaced people with shelter, food, income generating activities, legal aid and a wide range of other protection assistance. It is of utmost importance for DRC to work in compliance with the DRC Accountability and Quality Management system in the area of Finance. Smooth, reliable and effective operational systems are preconditions for DRC to maintain its position as a trustworthy and reliable partner for our donors and an accountable organisation towards our beneficiaries.

DRC has been operating in the West Africa region for over 15 years, running a combination of emergency, livelihood, protection and advocacy programmes through Country Offices (COs) Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria and a Regional Office (RO) in Abidjan. DRC has 17 offices and more than 500 staff members across the WA region.

DRC started operating in Nigeria in 2015 where plans to run a combination of emergency, livelihood, WASH, protection and advocacy programmes has been set. DRC currently has offices in Abuja, Yola, Mubi and planning to run an office in Maiduguri and Yobe, besides 20 staff members subject to increase in near future

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

Job Title: Emergency Project Assistant

Locations:

The Job

  • The Project Assistant is to assist in the implementation of the emergency response activities comprised of food/non-food distribution, water, sanination and hygiene (WASH) and shalter under the direction of Emergency Officer and in collaboration with other actors.
  • DRC is inviting local candidates to apply for the position of Emergency Response Assistant - to support its activities under the project "Emergency response for displaced Yola, Maiduguri and Mubi.
Duties and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Emergency Officer, the holder of this position shall perform the following specific tasks:
  • Assist and Ensure data collection on new arrivals on a daily basis and coordinate with DRC’s collaborative partners, assess their needs and report accordingly by: Filling out a questionnaire, conduct interviews using DRC profiling system
  • Participates and assist in Emergency program planning and coordination of needs assessments, state of play and periodic surveys, and forward the findings to stakeholders;
  • Participate in the planning of design and implement the hygiene promotion measures and to give priority to public health risks according to the agreed plan.
  • Assist in Mobilizing the communities for the realization of all project / program activities, with a strong focus on sanitation hygiene.
  • Disseminating and sharing information with Persons of Concern on their rights and access to services
  • Participate in the identification of health problems and in targeted communities.
  • Collect the basic epidemiological data in the Integrated Health Center).
  • Collect data on behaviour vis- `a-vis the communities of waterborne diseases through participatory methods.
  • Assist in Preparing and Conducting communities Meetings in the intervention areas.
  • Collect data on hygiene in targeted Lessons to Schools
  • Assist in the Implementation of Water Committees, Sanitation and Hygiene in the intervention areas.
  • Assist in Individually and collectively identify the strengths and weaknesses of village committees and propose appropriate solutions.
  • Train / educate households on home water treatment.
  • Assist in Mobilize the IDP community affected host population and facilitate awareness raising activities with other partner organizations, disseminating information about services available for IDPs and affected host communities.
  • Target groups in the IDP settlements.
  • In collaboration with Camp Management authorities, Community leaders and other agencies, establish Community Emergency Networks to strengthen the community’s self-protection capacities.
  • Set up necessary measures and create a conducive environment to ensure confidentiality during interviews and to secure sensitive information.
  • Work to build up a key informant network to monitor movement of IDP’s with specific protection and humanitarian assistant
  • At field level Keep good relations with local implementing actors, local authorities and other international and local stakeholders
  • Assist in Maintaining excel database to ensure that statistics and other reports are produced on a timely basis;
  • Liaise, establish a good working relationship with all humanitarian actors, community leaders and IDPs in the IDP settlements and host communities to encourage participation in, support for and a better understanding of the program activities.
  • Assist in Identify key informants in villages (Imam, especially the influential and charismatic women.
Joint responsibility between Watsan and PHP but lead by PHP:
  • Assist in mobilising people and communities to carry out ‘clean–ups’ and help construct wash facilities where required.
  • Carrying out community consultations, including feedback, around sitting and design of facilities
  • Assist in setting up water and sanitation maintenance systems (including committees, training, provision of tools, equipment and/or spare parts, revenue collection systems).
  • Make people and communities aware that they have the right to give feedback (and complain) and we have the obligation to respond, staff can differentiate between feedback and complaints
  • Assessing technical options for the provision of water, sanitation and emergency shelter
  • Any other tasks delegated by the Supervisor
Key Requirements
  • Higher Diploma of Public health.
  • Two years Work experience with non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and/or displaced population is a very strong asset.
  • Strong ability to work in a variety of environments and in remote locations without communication or amenities.
  • Remains productive when under pressure with ability to prioritise effectively, and respects and adheres to deadlines.
  • Fluency in English (spoken and written) is required and other local language.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and Email application software Languages:
  • English Language and have a sound knowledge of the local languages of Maiduguri and Mubi.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish effective working relations with staff, beneficiaries, duty bearers and other stakeholders.

Reporting:
  • Prepare weekly and monthly plans & reports to Emergency Officer.
  • Provide the emergency manager with relevant documents, and channel issues.
