Job Title: Translators (Hausa – English)

In line with the global mission, Girl Effect Nigeria (GEN) currently works with adolescent girls in Kano, Kaduna and Jigawa states and the Federal Capital territory Abuja to ensure that girls from Northern Nigeria (Arewa girls) are equipped to make positive choices about their future, and their families and communities support them to do so. Our activities to date have been designed to address the aim of transforming the lives of Northern Nigerian adolescent girls by repositioning them in society as critical drivers for development.

We seek to identify Girl Specialists and Gender experts with an interest in future work with GEN who can provide expertise in the following areas:

Qualifications and Experiance
  • Degree in business, international development, social sciences, statistics, demography, or related field.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in working with the development sector
  • Demonstrable experience with similar exercises in similar position
  • Very good knowledge of NGOs, CBOs and CSOs in Northern Nigeria.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English language required, including report development, writing and editing.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in Hausa language is an advantage.

Job Title:  Consultant, Kano State NGO Mapping Research, Nigeria

In line with the global mission, Girl Effect Nigeria (GEN) currently works with adolescent girls in Kano, Kaduna and Jigawa states and the Federal Capital territory Abuja to ensure that girls from Northern Nigeria (Arewa girls) are equipped to make positive choices about their future, and their families and communities support them to do so. Our activities to date have been designed to address the aim of transforming the lives of Northern Nigerian adolescent girls by repositioning them in society as critical drivers for development.

In order to better serve girls in the above mentioned states, GEN wishes to commission a mapping exercise to understand all organisations operating in Kano state that have a specific interest or focus on girls. This could include NGOs, media partners, private sector, humanitarian, and government players.

Objectives
  • To identify organizations directly or indirectly working for and with girls across the themes of education, health, safety and violence, economic empowerment and girl’s voice, rights and participation.
  • To collect detailed information on identified organisations’ capacity, nature, scope, terms and level of their engagement in development work with particular focus on initiatives for girls
  • To draft a mapping report that will serve as a reliable reference tool for Girl Effect Nigeria (GEN) in identifying the organizations best equipped to partner with GEN in delivering services or media products for girls in Kano state
  • Include detail on which Local Government Areas are served by each NGO and CBO and in which thematic areas, and why these LGAs were selected for programme implementatio
Timing
Total duration of work to last 6 weeks.

Consultant NGOs mapping in Kano State
  • Map organisations in Kano working across the themes of education, health, safety and violence, economic empowerment and girl’s voice, rights and participation and by LGA
  • Identify organisations who directly work with and for girls
  • Identify organisations who indirectly work with and for girls
  • Map the capacity of the organisations to deliver good quality services, research, and/or media products (based on criteria to be provided by GEN)
  • Provide an overview of what initiatives these organisations are or have provided for girls, across each Local Government Area in Kano state in the thematic areas outlined above, and why these areas were selected for interventions
  • Provide key contact details for each organisation identified as prospective partners.
Qualifications and Experiance
  • Degree in business, international development, social sciences, statistics, demography, or related field.
  • At least 3 years’ experience in working with the development sector
  • Demonstrable experience with similar exercises in similar position
  • Very good knowledge of the development sector, local government, and the media landscape in Northern Nigeria.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills in English language required, including report development, writing and editing.
  • Ability to communicate fluently in Hausa language is an advantage.
Deliverables
  • Submit an inception report within one week of commissioning, with a comprehensive methodology for the assignment and detailed work-plan with timelines
  • Develop data collection tools / frameworks
  • Conduct all desk research and interviews with relevant actors in the NGO, CBO and CSO sectors as required to meet information gathering objectives
  • Submit a draft report of findings and recommendations for review by Girl Effect Nigeria. The draft report will be commented on and returned to you within one week of submission
  • Produce a revised final report latest one week after the receipt of the draft report comments
Reporting

All documentation should be written in plain English and sent to Girl Effect Nigeria (GEN) as electronic copies. The consultant will report to the Monitoring, Learning and Results (MLR) consultant in the GEN office. A final approved work would be reproduced in hard copies and submitted to GEN.

Risk Elements

Due to the unpredictable nature of security in Nigeria, especially Northern Nigeria and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), there is the likely possibility that while carrying out this assignment, the consultant may be impacted/ affected by conflict or insecurity in the North. While some parts of the North and the FCT is relatively safe, the consultant would need to bear this in mind, put in place a safety strategy as well as err on the side of caution while discharging their duties. The consultant will be responsible for his own safe and that of his employees.

Qualitative Research

Have experience in:
  • Working with team members to identify project goals;
  • Establishing research methodologies and techniques for qualitative data collection and research variables;
  • Offering recommendations on evaluating projects;
  • Creating research monitoring plan, monitor the activities of research teams;
  • Reviewing data, analysing variables;
  • Conducting interviews, FGDs and other qualitative research processes
  • The use of MS Excel, MS Word and PowerPoint to support report writing
  • Writing qualitative reports
Quantitative Research

Have experience in:
  • Working with team members to identify project goals;
  • Establishing research methodology and techniques for qualitative data collection and research variables;
