Reports to: Society Programme Manager
Purpose of Job
- To work with the Director Society, Society Programme Manager and
other members of the Education and Society team to manage delivery of
projects in the Society Strategic Business Unit.
- To support the delivery of other activity in Abuja and the north of Nigeria across our entire SBU portfolio.
Context and Environment
- The British Council in Nigeria works in three strategic business areas; Arts, English and Exams, Education and Society.
- Working with partners across the justice sector and with civil
society to strengthen the rule of law, ensure access to justice and
address and resolve conflict.
- Working to contribute to improved opportunities for women and girls through all our programmes.
- The Society portfolio in Nigeria is delivered through a mix of
large scale donor funded contract work including the Justice for All
(J4A) and Nigeria Stability and Reconciliation (NSRP) programmes as well
as partnership projects, including Active Citizens, Northern Nigeria
Girls’ Enrolment Programme and Premier Skills. Our work focuses on three
key areas:
- Working with civil society to enable the development of more inclusive, open and stable societies.
Accountabilities, Responsibilities and Main Duties
Project Management and Coordination:
- Manage project activity to agreed timelines, costs and established performance indicators
- Responsible for reporting project performance using British Council corporate M&E systems
- Responsible for organising and managing training, dissemination and programme management events.
- Manage regular reporting on financial, delivery and impact performance from partners, contractors and suppliers.
- Support external programme partners and consultants delivering
activity by providing guidance on appropriate British Council policies
and guidelines including Child Protection, EDI, security and data
protection.
Financial Management:
- Responsible for programme procurement in line with established corporate policies and guidelines
- Responsible for developing detailed activity and event budgets
and managing delivery and reporting of programme activity against agreed
budgets with an emphasis on value for money
- Support the Programme Manager in preparing monthly financial performance reports.
Internal Communications:
- Work with British Council Nigeria Marketing and Communications
team to develop and disseminate case studies, reports and impact stories
for internal communication channels including intranet, blogs and
newsletters
Contract and account management
In compliance with corporate standards, processes and templates for contract and fund management:
- Support Programme Manager in drafting agreements for all project contractors, consultants and suppliers
- As part of Country CRM framework, maintains and updates the CRM,
recording contacts/ leads and outcomes of meetings , ensuring follow up
action is carried out in a timely and efficient manner
- Monitor proper invoicing and payment schedule from donors
- Develop and manage relationship with project delivery partners, contractors and suppliers.

Skills and Knowledge
Managing Projects:
- Works with project management systems and procedures, and has a track record of compliance with them as a project team member.
- Examines project data and performance, reporting on progress and recommending corrective action as needed.
- Analyses requirements with the sponsor/stakeholders, defining
the specification with awareness of equality and diversity impact,
planning, revising, implementing and evaluating on small-to-medium scale
and/or low risk projects.
Communication Skills:
- Displays good listening, writing and speaking skills, setting
out logical arguments clearly and adapting language and form of
communication to meet the needs of different people/audiences.
Planning and Organising:
- Organises own work over weeks and months, or plans ahead for
others, taking account of priorities and the impact on other people.
Managing Finance and Resources:
- Monitors and controls an agreed budget within a defined area, producing reports and analyses and contributing to planning.
Experience:
- Experience of project design, management and monitoring (Essential)
- Experience working in the non-profit sector (desirable)
Qualifications
- Project Management Certification (PMP, Prince2, APM or other) - Essential
- Bachelor’s Degree - Desirable
- Post-graduate degree in Education, Humanities or Social Sciences - Desirable
