What file format should my CV/resume be in? (Job seeker Question)

This is yet another question from a job seeker. Pheeew!

Question: What file format should my CV/resume be in?

Answer:
While applying for jobs and sending out your resume, there usually will be instructions on which file format to use. However, sometimes it's not specified.

According to employer surveys, 99% of employers want either a Microsoft Word(.doc) or a PDF file of your resume.

If your resume is a PDF, you can be sure your formatting will be preserved exactly as you want it. If it’s in Microsoft Word, the document may display differently on the recipient’s computer than it does on yours.
Most employers prefer getting resumes formatted in MS Word because Word documents can easily be put into an ATS (recruiting database system called an Applicant Tracking System) for keyword search, storage, sorting, and distribution. Most ATS's can't search PDFs.

However, both file formats are perfectly okay.

Avoid plain text resumes altogether since they don’t look as polished as formatted ones.
