WASH Officer (Emergency WASH and MPCA Project) at Relief Rescue Initiative (RRI)


Relief Rescue Initiative (RRI) is a National Non-governmental organization, which is committed and active in community humanitarian and developmental projects with its presence in Borno, Adamawa, Benue, Yobe and Jigawa States. The primary focus of RRI is on improving and alleviating the problems of the less privileged, deprived, vulnerable group and people affected by armed conflicts and other Natural/Man made disasters in their struggle to obtain a life of justice and dignity. Areas of focus include; food security and livelihood, Nutrition, Protection, Education, Water sanitation and hygiene (WASH), Metal health, and psychosocial support (MHPSS) achieved through the implementation of projects targeted at the community level especially on the most vulnerable members of the community. In line with its focus, RRI will be implementing WASH and Multipurpose Cash Assistance in Jigawa States In partnership with IOM-RRF Project. This is aimed at preventing already vulnerable House Holds from falling into starvation, malnutrition and diseases.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:



Job Title: WASH Officer (Emergency WASH and MPCA Project)

Locations: Jahun, Miga, Kirikasama, Buji and Gwaram LGAs - Jigawa
Duration: 3 months
Position: 2 slots
Reporting to: Project Coordinator

Description 

  • Under the direct supervision of the project coordinator, the WASH Officer is responsible to plan, develop, monitor and evaluate the assigned Sanitation and Hygiene promotion component of the WASH/ MPCA Emergency project

Responsibilities 

  • Identify and select the Community outreach agents from the affected flood victims who will be part of the Community Hygiene and Sanitation mobilization and co-ordinate their work
  • Design the contents and methodology of the Community Hygiene and Sanitation mobilization campaign as required by the project and according to the instructions of the project coordinator and the guidelines of the humanitarian cluster working group;
  • Prepares detail implementation plan, monitor and follow up the timely implementation of activities;
  • Provides support and take part to identify, facilitate and provide various trainings for hygiene promoters, sanitation monitors and solid waste supervisors;
  • Collects, compile and analyze baseline data; facilitate KAP/KPC surveys and present the result assessed about hygiene and sanitation situation of the target population before and after intervention;
  • Lead distribution of WASH NFIs (water containers, hygiene item and water treatment chemicals)
  • Monitors and follow-up to ensure the proper dissemination of hygiene and sanitation messages to the target beneficiaries;
  • Devise different methodologies for successful achievement of RRI goal by providing technical and technology assistance;
  • Collect, analyze and compile reports from hygiene and sanitation activities and propose better implementation strategy in consultation with the Project coordinator;
  • Represent RRI externally with community, local government, cluster coordination meeting and other stakeholders;
  • Mobilize the subordinates and lead WASH NFI distribution;
  • Collect and disseminate the outputs and drawbacks gained from WASH team in every month report of hygiene and sanitation promotion activities;
  • Provide technical advice for hygiene promoters, sanitation monitors and solid waste supervisors and monitor the activities;
  • Scheduling most of his/her time to spend on field work attend hygiene and sanitation activities to facilitate for improved hygiene practices;
  • Monitors the hygiene and sanitation situation in Jigawa flood affected area and provide regular updates;
  • Maintains close working relationship with government and other relevant partners in the target area and especially IOM.
  • Carry out other additional duties as assigned by line-manager.

Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse

  • Actively promote PSEA (Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse) standards within Relief Rescue Initiative and amongst beneficiaries served by Relief Rescue Initiative.

Compliance& Ethics:

  • Promotes and encourages a culture of compliance and ethics throughout Relief Rescue Initiative. As applicable to the position, maintains a clear understanding of Relief Rescue Initiative and donor compliance and ethics standards and adheres to those standards. Conducts work with the highest level of integrity.

Experience

  • Have technical background and knowledge in environmental health and 2 years of demonstrated work experience in designing and implementing hygiene and sanitation programs;
  • Capable of training IDPs and motivating community support;
  • Ability to understand the cultural context of the community, Experience in participatory techniques and community mobilization.
  • Positive and professional attitude, able to organize, maintain and prioritize work under pressure and able to work in an insecure environment;
  • Excellent communication skill, preferably with the host community and IDPs;
  • Accountability & responsiveness within areas of responsibilities.
  • Knowledge and experience in proper excreta disposal, solid waste management;
  • Excellent interpersonal, organizational and time management skills;

Qualifications

  • B.Sc Degree in environmental health science, environmental engineering, public health, or other related fields.
  • Computer literacy (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint)

Languages:

  • Excellent skills in speaking, reading and writing English and Hausa languages is an advantage.
