Org. Setting and Reporting
  • The Department of Global Communications/Strategic Communication division internship is for two months with an opportunity for extension, pending on the needs of the department and the availability of the candidate.
  • The internship is UNPAID and full-time. Interns work five days per week (35 hours) under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.
  • This internship is located in the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Lagos, within the Information Centers Service (ICS), Strategic Communications Division (SCD), Department of Global Communications (DGC).
Responsibilities Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Compile Daily news headlines from Nigerian media indicating the main news articles of relevance to the United Nations;
  • Ensure appropriate content is updated daily on the social media platforms of UNIC Lagos;
  • Draft news articles and press releases on key events of the UN;
  • Monitor activities of social media platforms of other UN entities in Nigeria to identify possible content useful for UNIC Lagos platforms;
  • Participate in ongoing UN communication campaigns;
  • Participate in and take notes of selected meetings of importance to the Centre;
  • Draft statements/talking points/presentations for Director or NIO on events/activities of the Centre;
  • Assist the back office with the implementation of administrative tasks (draft responses, filing, etc.)
  • Contribute to the organization of commemorative events such UN days observances, UDHR and SDGs campaign, press conference, educational/Media outreaches, etc.;
  • Prepare concept notes for events/support planning of events
  • Monitor UN News and Media products from HQ to get those relevant to Nigeria.

Education To qualify for an internship with the United Nations Internship Programme, the following conditions must be met: Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
  • Be computer literate in standard software applications;
  • Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
  • Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
  • Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent); or
  • Have graduated with a university degree (as defined above) and, if selected, must commence the internship;
Work Experience:
  • Applicants to the UN Internship Programme are not required to have professional work experience. However, a field of study that is closely related to the type of internship that you are for is desirable
Languages:
  • English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. Fluency in English is required for the internship. Knowledge of Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba languages is desirable.
