The Mines Advisory Group (MAG) is a global humanitarian and advocacy organisation that finds, removes and destroys landmines, cluster munitions and unexploded bombs from places affected by conflict.

Job Title: Technical Field Assistant

Location: Abuja

Background

Overview

  • Under the administrative management of the Regional Programme Manager (RPM) and/or the Country Director (CD) and the supervision of the Technical Field Manager (TFM), the Technical Field Coordinator (TFC) will provide practical and administrative support to facilitate and coordinate MAG's Weapons and ammunition management (WAM) activities with our beneficiaries in the designated country, based on the recommendations of the TFM and in compliance with the norms and regulations in force in the country project

Responsibilities

General:

  • Establish and maintain good rapport with our beneficiaries and focal points as well as all stakeholders, suppliers of goods and services, construction companies. 
  • Submit accurate operational reports as directed by the TFM
  • Contribute to internal discussions and planning aimed at improving the results and impact of MAG's WAM projects
  • Establish and maintain good relations with all (inter)national MAG staff.
  • Ensure that the RPM and/or RD and TFM are well informed of all key operational issues and any technical difficulties that may arise during implementation.

Prepare and Coordinate Training Courses:

  • To be able to print, in accordance with MAG procedures, all pedagogical materials intended for training (training booklet, aide-memoire, tests, training report) as well as the administrative documents prepared by the TFM (training plan, training content, timetable) Send to the focal points the various preparatory documents for the training courses (training plan, training content, timetable).
  • Be able to explain to authority the content of training courses and the standards relating to them.
  • Follow-up of the correspondence in order to have all the necessary information for the beginning of the training courses (listing and information of the candidates).
  • Preparation of equipment (procedure for purchasing supplies, classroom reconnaissance, setting up displays, testing video overhead projector, pass for TFM etc.).

Prepare and facilitate WAM field Activities:

  • Forward to the focal points all correspondence relating to assessments, compliance visits and key handovers carried out by the TFM.
  • Under the direction of the TFM and in coordination with the focal points, prepare the logistics and organise the assessment visits and/or any other WAM activities (handing over of keys, compliance visit etc.)

Technical Assistance:

  • Monitoring and control of the manufacture of security equipment for weapons and ammunition stores (bullet traps, cabinets, racks);
  • Conduct technical assessments of armories and ammunition stores under the direction of the TFM
  • Conduct training, armory storekeeper, armory manager, ammunition storekeeper, ammunition manager under the direction of the TFM
  • Site monitoring (containers, construction and rehabilitation).
  • Comply with MAG construction SOPs based on MOSAIC and IATG standards

Health, Safety:

  • Working within the framework of MAG's values, promoting its philosophy and mission.
  • Work towards achieving the objectives of the programme and/or department's business plan.
  • Ensure that all incoming staff receives a WAM briefing.

Essential Requirements

  • Education level Bachelor's Degree or higher
  • Computer literacy in Word and Excel
  • English language and writing skills.
  • National Security Services (Military, Police etc) experience prereferral 
  • Experience of working with rural communities from a variety of different ethnic groups.
  • Good communication and teamwork skills
