Prevention Officer at the MENTOR Initiative


The MENTOR Initiative is an international NGO, which directly assists developing countries in their fight against malaria and other vector borne disease. The MENTOR Initiative provides support in the fight against malaria and other vector borne diseases through three key activities: intensive development of the technical capacity of humanitarian organizations and national partners, technical support for in-country programs, and operational research for the development and evaluation of innovative and context-specific tools for improved vector borne disease control. 

The MENTOR Initiative works in collaboration with various international agencies and governments including the United Nations, the Ministry of Health, and other Humanitarian Organizations. In close collaboration with the Ministry of Health, MENTOR is implementing large scale Indoor Residual Spray (IRS) and community mobilization on malaria and hygiene promotion campaigns in the conflict affected areas of Borno state of Nigeria.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

 

Job Title: Prevention Officer

Location: Dikwa, Borno
Start Date: 01st January 2023
Reporting to: Senior Program Officer
Duration: Projected contract duration is 6 Months - with possible extension

Overall Job Purpose

  • Under the direct supervision of the Senior Program Officer / Prevention Coordinator, the Prevention Officer is responsible for implementation of all IEC/BCC Campaigns, prevention and VBD control Activities, managing other tasks of MENTOR-Initiative in Dikwa.

Key Tasks and Responsibilities

  • To manage rapid assessment visits to the sites selected for the IEC/BCC Campaigns, and manage other planning activities.
  • To conduct base line survey and end line survey in all the designated areas and compare the impact of both surveys conducted.
  • Support the Senior Program Officer to identify suitable casual workers for the campaign according to MENTOR Initiative selection criteria in coordination with relevant ministries/local authorities.
  • Identify training venues in close coordination with LGA focal persons/community leaders.
  • To train teams on and conduct population sampling and surveys as required.
  • To maintain records of all the data in the MENTOR office and prepositioning at target sites.
  • Support the Senior Program Officer in sensitization meetings with the key stakeholder before starting of each activity.
  • To help in the development of standard IEC materials and also to organize and facilitate trainings for community Mobilizers on proper IEC/BCC.
  • To provide timely prevention monthly work-plan that shall be evaluated with the corresponding activities at the end of the relevant month.
  • To cross-check and compile daily data from IEC/BCC Campaigns, submit it to Senior Program Officer on timely basis.
  • Regular cross check of all the databases with hard data before sharing with the Senior Program Officer/Prevention Coordinator.
  • Daily coordination meeting with the before and after the activity.
  • To keep relevant ministries and stakeholders informed about the activities and ensure that relevant documents are signed by The MENTOR Initiative and Community Focal Persons.
  • To monitor IEC/BCC Campaigns and be a part of the any distribution activities in the field.
  • To organize, assist, and facilitate 2 days trainings of daily workers, and to ensure them how to handle the ongoing campaign according to the MENTOR recommended procedures.
  • In coordination with the logistician, to ensure that all equipment and materials are maintained and stored under good conditions.
  • Any other related tasks assigned by the line manager or Prevention Coordinator.

Project support:

  • Assist the Field Senior Program Officer in the day-to-day activities’ implementation of the project.
  • Provide the logistic and administrative support where needed and when requested.
  • Participate in training sessions and meetings

Reporting:

  • Provide regular updates to Field Senior Officer/ Prevention Coordinator on the progress of all field activities.
  • Biweekly reporting of the program activities.
  • Assist the Field Senior Program Officer/ME Officer in the reporting of the Biweekly and monthly
  • Assist in reporting on need basis with the Field Senior Program Officer/Prevention Coordinator

Others:

  • Work as part of an established team with excellent communication skills, team builder, flexible, adaptable and willing to work and travel to other field locations when required.
  • All other tasks asked by the Prevention Coordinator/SMT if needed.
  • Adhere to the agreed MENTOR Code of conduct on Ethics and Integrity and safeguarding including Whistle blowing policy.

External:

  • Liaise with the Senior Program officer on critical or sensitive matters.
  • Specific external communication such as interview by media groups, other agencies, donors or government high level authorities should be referred to the Prevention Coordinator at all times.
  • The tasks and responsibilities defined in this job description are non-exhaustive and can evolve depending on the organization’s needs. 

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Biological Sciences / Public Health or Environmental Sciences   
  • 2 to 3 years of Previous INGO and/or work experience related to health at community level.
  • Able to work as part of an established team with excellent communication skills, team builder, flexible, adaptable.
  • Reporting skills and use of KOBO Software
  • Familiarity with INGO working environments and standard procedures preferred
  • Transparency and integrity
  • Excellent Computer Skills; Proficiency Microsoft package (Excel, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint)
  • Dikwa indigene and resident preferred.
