Port Captain in a Marine Logistics and Supply Services Company

Job Title: Port Captain
Location: Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
Job Duties and Responsibilities
The Port Captain required to:
- Coordinate and direct the operations of the Vessel, making detailed plans to accomplish goals.
- Ensure regular inspections to monitor compliance.
- Ensure Lost Time Injuries (LTI) is reduced to zero throughout the year in all company’s locations.
- Oversee the activities of vessel deck department members and other technical officers appropriately.
- Provide competency assessment of all deck officers as per SMS procedures
- Attend and coordinate with clients on the daily progress report of vessels in field operation
- To provide operational support to Deck Officers and monitor Deck officer’s competency in Navigational requirements.
- Provide training for master and chief mates in operational areas and requirements prior to their undergoing a practical and theoretical competency check
- Ensure that every crew onboard is working in accordance with Company safety procedures and job description
- Coordinate on the arrival of all vessels at the port with regards to vessel provision and spares operation
- Follow up with crew personnel in cooperation with the HR &crewing department to ensure that they are meeting with the Safety and Environmental Standards required by any specific party (MLC, Flag State, Class Society, Clients, etc.)
- Ensure that any deficiencies that arise to be immediately rectifies and reported accordingly.
- Provide accurate capability assessment report and conduct sea trial at Shipyards for drydock or new builds in a foreign country.
- Responsible for all vessel certificates to be current and up to date as necessary
- Ensure that all operational information is forwarded to the vessel and adhered to
- Participate in and issue written reports/statements of inspections, investigation and similar activities when required
- Onshore monitoring and tracking of vessels in ship survey status, compliance to Flag State and Port State Control
- Work in collaboration with Technical and MQA team to maintain sufficient and up to date critical spares (including LSA/FFA) stock at warehouse in relation to the procurement and delivery as well as ensure that critical spares do not impede on vessel performance
- Perform all necessary activities to enhance efficient and safe operation of the vessel.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum: Degree in Nautical Science/Marine related degrees with minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience in marine operations.
- Minimum 12-15 years’ experience as a Master or Chief Mate on offshore support vessel/ Security/FSIV/PSV etc
- Excellent knowledge of dry docking of vessels and flag states and class requirements
- Vessel maintenance techniques.
- Excellent Organization and Supervisory Skills
- Good knowledge of Offshore and Ship Operation
- Management of Risks and Emergencies
- Good communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Process and Change Management
- with at least 4 years in a management role of a marine firm prefered
- Preferably with COC Class 1 (ocean going/ unlimited /motor)
- Good knowledge of Marine Management and technology
- Good knowledge of Marine Safety Management Systems and ISM code
Other Considerations:
- Strong business and numerical skills.
- Must be resident in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.
