Job Title: Translator, Portuguese

Role Overview

  • Under the supervision of the Revisor, the incumbent shall be responsible for translating, from French or English into Portuguese, a wide variety of texts documents for Parliamentary meetings, conferences, working papers, scientific articles, speeches, programme statements, web materials, reports, correspondences and provide other translation services to the Parliament.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Translate documents into Portuguese from either one or two of the other official Community languages, French and English.
  • Assist in compiling and building a body of terminologies peculiar to and useful in the work of the Parliament.
  • Assist with consecutive interpretation during staff and management meetings.
  • Translates a wide variety of texts documents for ECOWAS conferences and meetings, working papers, scientific articles, speeches, programme statements, web materials, reports, correspondence, etc;
  • Perform the terminological and conceptual research required in order to produce high-quality translations of scientific, technical, legal, and administrative texts;
  • Translates and self-revises from texts of considerable difficulty, using computer assisted translation tools were possible;
  • Assists in providing support for terminology and style; respond to queries about terminology, nomenclature, translation, and writing posed by staff; conducts linguistic research and assist in the maintenance of glossaries;
  • Contributes to the establishment of accurate terminology and to promote the terminology data base;
  • Assists in review of external translators for the ECOWAS roster;
  • Provides translation support in emergencies, including working under tight deadlines and quick turnaround of translated documents;
  • Provides feedback for machine translation dictionaries;
  • Participates in professional forums, conferences and seminars; shares knowledge and practices with translators of other international organizations; keeps abreast of specialized terminology and best translation practices;
  • Perform any other duties as may be assigned by the supervisor.

Academic Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in translation or equivalent from a recognized Institute or University.
  • 5 years of experience in translation and revision and technical writing;
  • Proven knowledge with computer-assisted translation tools, machine translation tools and on-screen editing tools;
  • Knowledge of the structure and content of language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, grammar, and history.

Role Overview

Role and Responsibilities

  • Monitor developments in the National Assemblies of Member States and bring issues to the attention of the Secretary General for action;
  • Monitor developments in other Regional Parliaments and bring lessons to the attention of the Secretary General;

Academic Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in International Relations, Political Science, Public Administration or a related field from a recognized University.
  • 2 years of progressively responsible professional working experience in political science, political affairs, international relations, law, mediation, conflict resolution, or related area is required;
  • knowledge and understanding of ECOWAS agency or institutional mandate, international theories, concepts and developments and ECOWAS strategies, including cooperation with Member-States and international organizations;
  • knowledge and understanding of ECOWAS agency/institution’s relations with national and regional agencies, International organizations and other international and diplomatic institutions;

Role Overview

  • Under the supervision of the Principal Officer, Human Resources Division, the incumbent shall assist to provide support in the various human resources functions at the Parliament.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Prepare the monthly Payroll and other periodic benefits for the staff of the Parliament, such as Housing Allowances, Leave Allowances, Education Grant, End of Service Benefits, etc. Use the ECOLINK system for this purpose;
  • Contribute to implementing HR policies and resolving any related issues; give explanations, provide clarifications and make recommendations for resolving issues in the course of policy implementation;
  • Assist in hiring and uploading approved staff data / documents on the SAP sotfware sucha as ECOLINK etc;
  • Assist train and assist staff members in accessing various HR services through the Employee Self Service system;
  • Assist with the facilating the process of performance management by drafting circulars and assisting staff members and their managers through the cycle in the ECOLINK system; follow up and assist appraisors up to the completion of the exercise; implement annual progression as awarded;
  • Assist in compiling HR budget and HR reports, and in preparing presentations and drafting correspondence for the Division;
  • Performs other related duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Academic Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Social Sciences or Humanities from a recognized University.
  • 2 years relevant work experience in human resources, administration or related area, is required;
  • Basic technical knowledge of human resources management including professional work experience in human resources at entry level operations;
  • Basic knowledge of office routines and practices relating to document management, records management and / or office management of relevance to the human resources management functional areas;
  • Knowledge of routine human resources business processes involving repetitive tasks supported by clear instructions and regular coaching e.g. data entry, data verification, classification of information of relevance to the human resources management functional areas.

Role Overview

  • Under the supervision of the Principal Officer, Library, Documentation & Research, the incumbent shall assist Members of Parliament  by providing them relevant well researched information for their work.

Role and Responsibilities

  • Respond in a timely manner to requests for information or enquiries from Committee members and other Members of Parliament;
  • Undertake research, usually from readily available sources, on clearly defined subjects;
  • Analyse and evaluate research and interpret data in order to identify the key issues;
  • Prepare and present, in both written and oral forms, the results of research in a manner appropriate for answering parliamentary questions, providing briefings to Committee members, or for providing content for newspaper articles and press releases ;
  • Prepare and provide briefings for Committee Clerks to be tabled at meetings of the Committee;
  • Monitor motions, petitions, legislations, Hansard, and other parliamentary activity as appropriate;
  • Monitor coverage in the media issues before the Committees;
  • Advise and guide the Committees, Members of Parliament, the Secretary-General and Committee Clerks on relevant policy matters;

  • Fluency in oral and written expressions in one of the ECOWAS official languages of the Community (English, French & Portuguese). Knowledge of an additional one will be an added advantage.

  • Ability to contribute and/or lead on projects as per accepted project management standards and techniques, to co-ordinate contributions by others to set and meet deadlines;

  • Ability to identify, collect and assess indicators to monitor performance and to take proactive remedial action as required.
