Driver at Norwegian Church Aid ('NCA')


Norwegian Church Aid ('NCA') is a member of the ACT Alliance and works with people and local actors, especially Faith-based actors in many countries where it works in their struggle to eradicate poverty and injustices. We provide humanitarian assistance in disasters and work for long-term development in local communities and societies. In order to address the root causes of poverty, we advocate for just decisions by public authorities, businesses and religious leaders.

NCA has a presence in Nigeria to respond to the Humanitarian crisis in Northeast Nigeria. NCA has its core competencies in Gender Based Violence and Water Sanitation and Hygiene. NCA has its strengths in works and invest in local partners ensures building their capacities are built from the onset of response, in order to enable them to have the capacity to respond in a long-term intervention including recovery and development.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

 

 

Job Title: Driver

Locations: Borno
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary
The role of the Driver is to ensure provision of reliable and secure driving services for the transport of authorized personnel, delivery and collection of mail, documents and other related goods and supplies under the authorization of the supervisor.

Specific Objectives of Mission (Objectives, Scope and Deliverables) Max 7 or Less.

Objective 1:

  • Compliance to fleet management policy and SOP

Objective 2:

  • Vehicle maintenance and checklist

Objective 3:

  • Documentation and Visibility

Roles and responsibilities (specific tasks, coordination etc...)

Objective 1. Compliance to fleet management policy and SOP:

  • Respect and observe NCA traffic regulations, speed limits and adjust speed according to road and risk conditions (for example, when driving in villages or populated areas).
  • Ensures that self and all passengers are wearing seat belts prior to departure.
  • Ensures that all vehicle movements are authorized in advance by relevant authority before commencing any trip.
  • Maintains the agreed fuel threshold; half tank and commence the process of refilling vehicle tank.
  • Observe the manufacturer technical conditions of use of vehicle.
  • Organise assigned task in the most efficient and effective manner, to minimize vehicle use (fuel consumption, wear and tear).
  • Act in a professional manner always with the understanding that the public associates your behaviour with NCA.
  • Observes the Federal/ State road, traffic laws and regulations.
  • Ensures that safe driving practices are adhered to including local driving rules and internally agreed standards.
  • Drives staff, guests, equipment, and materials safely and efficiently to required locations.

Objective 2. Maintenance and checklist:

  • Responsible for daily and weekly preventive maintenance and reporting problems detected with vehicle.
  • Diligently and promptly update the movement and fuel consumption log-book.
  • Ensures the official vehicle is safely parked within the office environment and approved locations before the curfew time.
  • Ensures all safety tools (e.g., first aid kit, fire extinguishers, towing rope, toolbox, etc.) are intact and functional.
  • Alert line manager when service and maintenance schedules are due.
  • Perform daily vehicle pre–departure checks to include fuel, engine oil, lights, tyres, horn, tools and equipment, brakes, windows, and mirrors, etc.

Objective 3. Documentation and Visibility:

  • Maintains the Vehicle Document Folder and ensure it is up to date.
  • Ensures visibility protocols are always adhered to.
  • Always be in possession of a valid driving license, official and/or personal means of identification when on board NCA vehicle.
  • Ensure waiver form for non NCA staff is filled and readily available in the vehicle.
  • Promptly report all relevant security incidents/concerns to supervisor.
  • Assists to ensure vehicle insurance and registration is updated and documented according to schedule.
  • Maintains an appropriate logbook registration for use of the car and to monitor appropriate logbook registration of other staff using the office vehicle.
  • Provides logistics / clerical support to the operations team and any other duties assigned.

Experience and Qualifications

  • Minimum qualification of ordinary National Diploma.
  • Minimum of two (2) years working experience as a driver with reputable organizations (INGOs, Corporate etc..).
  • Ability to read and write in English; ability to communicate with team and stakeholders fluently in English and Hausa is desirable.
  • Ability to work in a multi culture environment and adapt easily.
  • Willing to work occasional long and or irregular hours, shift duty, weekend and public holidays.
  • Discreet and respectful of confidentiality
  • Holder of a valid Nigeria driver’s licence.
  • Knowledge of Nigeria transportation law with good traffic judgment.
  • Familiar with the local terrain/routes and respond appropriately, in case of emergency.
