Job Title: Data Scientist (Independent Contractor)

Job Description

  • The Data Scientist is responsible for analyzing and turning large amounts of raw data into valuable insights that an organization needs in order to find patterns that will help improve a project and yield overall growth for the company. In this role, you should be highly analytical with a knack for analysis, math and statistics.
  • Critical thinking and problem-solving skills combined with a passion for machine-learning and research are essential for interpreting data.

Responsibilities

  • Identify valuable data sources and automate collection processes
  • Use strong business acumen, as well as an ability to communicate fundings, and mine vast amounts of data for useful insights
  • Undertake data collection, pre/processing analysis of structured and unstructured available datasets to discover trends and patterns
  • Analyze large amounts of information to discover trends and patterns to be used to influence how an organization approaches business challenges
  • Build predictive models and machine-learning algorithms and create presentations using data visualization techniques
  • Work closely with your business to identify issues and use data to propose solutions for effective decision making
  • Conduct research from which you'll develop prototypes and proof of concepts
  • Look for opportunities to use insights/datasets/code/models across other functions in the organisation (for example in the HR and marketing departments)
  • Communicate important information, recommendations and insights to business and IT leaders
  • Have a combined knowledge and experience of computer science, applications modeling, statistics, analytics and math to solve problems and provide solutions
  • Build algorithms and design experiments to merge, manage, interrogate and extract data to supply tailored reports to colleagues, customers or the wider organization
  • Use machine learning tools and statistical techniques to produce solutions to problems
  • Test data mining models to select the most appropriate ones for use on a project
  • Maintain clear and coherent communication, both verbal and written, to understand data needs and report results
  • Create clear reports that tell compelling stories about how customers or clients work with the business
  • Assess the effectiveness of data sources and data-gathering techniques and improve data collection methods

Requirements and Skills

  • BSc / BA in Computer Science, Engineering or relevant field; graduate degree in Data Science or other quantitative field is preferred
  • 3+ years experience as a Data Scientist or Data Analyst
  • Experience in data mining
  • Monte Carlo Simulation knowledge
  • Strong math skills (e.g. statistics, algebra)
  • Problem-solving aptitude and analytical mind
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills
  • Experience with political campaign
  • Understanding of machine-learning and operations research
  • Knowledge of R, SQL and Python (humpy, pandas,keras, sci-kite learn, spark); familiarity with Scala, Java or C++ is an asset
  • Experience using business intelligence tools (e.g. Tableau) and data frameworks (e.g. Hadoop)
