Center for Advocacy Transparency and Accountability Initiative (CATAI) was established in the year 2018 and registered as an NGO with Head Office in Maiduguri - Borno State. We have been visible in Borno Adamawa and Yobe states implementing projects in Education, protection, community empowerment, livelihood, environment, health, peacebuilding, and governance. We are currently implementing ‘Education, budget monitoring, and advocacy EBMAG project in Adamawa state, through the Malala fund. prevention, and response services for child survivors of Gender-Based Violence, including conflict-related sexual violence and protection from sexual exploitation and abuse in North-east Nigeria. Our approach is aligned with our mission to enhance service delivery and empower citizens to envision a world where people in the most remote areas of the globe can have access to the basic needs of life. Job Title: Community Engagement Officer

Locations: Mubi and Yola, Adamawa
Slots: 2 Openings
Employment Type: Contract
Contract Duration: 6 Months
Reports To: Project Coordinator

General Description of Role

  • Reporting to the project coordinator, you will work closely with the CATAI programs team communications and policy teams to lead community mobilization and engagement, particularly with people with lived experience of poverty and disadvantage with respect to education barriers.
  • The core purpose of your role is to support community empowerment and participation in creating awareness in breaking barriers of access to education for the girl child, budget monitoring and advocacy group public advocacy and change work, including the current Raise on the rate for good governance.

Responsibilities
Your responsibilities will also include:

  • Liaises and interacts regularly with children and youth, parents, teachers and the community in order to promote understanding and acceptance of CATAI Education activities.
  • Promotes awareness on Education issues within the community and disseminates means to raise concerns and feedback.
  • Supervises teachers and coordinates volunteer teachers in order to ensure effective, safe, stimulating and quality implementation of formal and non-formal educational activities.
  • In collaboration with, and under supervision of the program Manager, proposes education and outreach activities and planning, according to expressed needs by educational staff, including headmasters, teachers, and Departments of Education (DoE), as well as children’s wishes and needs.
  • S/he ensures punctual implementation and follow up of data collection, s/he is in charge of ensuring proficient utilization of education databases and ensures volunteers.
  • S/he in identifying capacity building needs among educational staff, the community, and other professionals relating to child protection and positive discipline in schools; including the identification of possible training participants and/or focal points.
  • Monitors and coach’s incentive teachers on the job, and takes care of building a respectful and non-stressful environment for children and the community.
  • Prepare activity schedule and monitor compliance, under the line manager supervision.
  • S/he is supporting rehabilitation and distribution to schools’ activities, by analyzing needs, proposing tailored intervention, leading assessment and surveys.

Requirements / Skills

  • Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences, Economics, International Affairs, or a related field required.
  • Two (2) years of professional humanitarian/development experience is required; experience with community-based projects is highly desired.
  • Extensive knowledge of community engagement and participatory processes of proven practical community engagement experience (managing integrated activities at once), including strong skills and experience in the community engagement process, report writing, participatory planning, and community entry.
  • Knowledge of urban and rural resilience concepts is advantageous.
  • Prior experience working with government actors and/or community leaders.
  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship-building abilities, as well as the capacity to effectively represent CATAI in forums and with donors.
  • Effective negotiation skills are necessary, and experience in dispute resolution is preferred.
  • The capacity to communicate concepts and ideas to other members of the community in a clear and convincing manner.
  • Excellent presentation and writing skills.
  • Capable of resolving complex problems through a collaborative and consultative approach.

Languages:

  • Fluency in spoken and written English is required, and other local language is an added advantage.

Computer / Other Tech Requirements:

  • Full professional competency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint.
