Job Title: Communications Officer - WRP Nigeria

Job Description

  • We are seeking a Communications Officer. This position will plan, manage and implement internal and external communication projects to promote HJFMRI Ltd Gte infectious diseases research and PEPFAR activities in Nigeria.
  • Focus on drafting and designing content for web, social media and print products for internal and external audiences, including stories/photographs, briefing books, itineraries, newsletters, factsheets, and press releases.
  • Facilitate and improve communication externally with key audiences and among employees and executive leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, write, prepare and/or review communications materials for internal and external audiences, including briefing books, employee newsletters, press releases and articles to be used at post or for headquarters HJFMRI public websites, social media, and newsletters.
  • Consult with appropriate staff/departments on internal/external communications issues and the production of publications and presentation materials for the purpose of ensuring accurate data/information
  • Arrange accompanying photographs for stories.
  • Maintain close collaboration with WRAIR-Africa, attending weekly meetings at the State Department as required.
  • Work with communication counterparts in USAID, CDC, and NMOD to review and/or contribute to press releases on PEPFAR program successes and lessons learned, new program inaugurations, key events, and other significant developments as directed by the DAO or the CD.
  • Work closely with HJF Global ID Communications Office regarding website and social media content submissions; consistency of logos, letterheads, and templates with current branding guidance; and general communication opportunities and issues that arise throughout the year.
  • Serves as the liaison for executive team, providing collaborative guidance and advice on integrated communication strategies to build employee morale, productivity, retention, and policy compliance.
  • Communicates initiatives and deadlines to employees in a variety of print, digital, and interpersonal ways; tasks may include creating and publishing company newsletters, calendars, blogs and Intranet posts, and assisting with internal meetings.
  • Help communicate around HJFMRI research activities in Nigeria to share locally and with HJFMRI.
  • Participate in HJFMRI Ltd Gte/WRP-N external engagements (e.g., meetings, workshops, seminars, conferences, etc.) for the purpose of networking, conveying and/or gathering information and photos necessary to “tell the story” of WRP-N.
  • Participates in out-of-town events as required. Develop, socialize, and implement an annual communication and outreach strategy that promotes public awareness of and support for WRP-N programs among external audiences.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills in English are essential. Strong people skills and ability to multi-task, and to produce quality narratives on short notice is required. Proven coordination and organizational skills within a fast-paced, multi-cultural work environment are also essential to this position.
  • Skills related to word processing are required, and familiarity or training in electronic mail, website development, Photoshop, PowerPoint, Canva and other publishing software is preferred.
  • Prior experience in a communications role required with leadership experience highly desired. Excellent organizational skills and Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
  • Experience with global health, PEPFAR and/or medical research, is preferred. Ability to work independently and also build relationships internally to facilitate communication of program-specific information and news.
  • The ability to prioritize and manage competing requests, and to differentiate messages based on audience segmentation is also essential to this position.Able to convert technical language to be easily understood by lay persons. Must be able to consistently plan, prioritize and organize work in a way that produces strategic results.

Qualifications
Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's Degree in English, Communications or similar required
  • 3-5 years experience required.

Work Environment

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting.
