Communications Officer at Global Rights
Global Rights is an international human rights and governance capacity-building non-governmental organization. Founded in Washington, D.C, in 1978 with the name International Human Rights Law Group, the organization changed its name to Global Rights: Partners for Justice in 2003 on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. In December 2014 it shut its Washington headquarters and devolved the center of its operations to its country office in Nigeria, from where the organization continues to work with local activists in Africa to promote and protect the rights of marginalized populations.
We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Communications Officer
Location: Abuja (FCT)

Key Responsibilities
- The Communications Officer is responsible for creating and publishing communications content on behalf of Global Rights, tracking campaign analytics and maintaining physical and digital media archives.
Specifically, this officer is expected to:
- Develop strategic advocacy campaigns designed to increase public awareness of Global Rights’ programs and projects
- Respond to media inquiries and perform media outreaches to achieve brand placement in publications
- Track analytics and create reports detailing successes and failures of communications campaigns
- Maintain digital and physical media archives including photos and videos
- Participate in the development and periodic update of the organization’s website
- Maintain a database of journalists and media personnel and establish positive relationships
- Coordinate relationship with vendors; preparing specifications and obtaining estimates for production of communication materials.
- Develop, write and edit promotional and communications materials, including press releases, blog posts, social media content and project proposals
- Ensure that all communications and promotional material aligns with brand standards
- Create digital and graphic designs such as infographics, website and social media contents, banners and displays, posters, newsletters, animations, and digital reports for projects activities
- Manage Global Rights’ social media accounts and other external communication platforms
- Keep current on emerging trends and developments in communication, electronic media, community relations, and public information, as well as community events, resources, and promotional opportunities.
- Provide feedback to Programs Unit on output and impact on social media
- Collaborate with Executive Director/supervisor to manage the image of the organization and liaison with other organizations
- Represent Global Rights at meetings and forums as assigned by the Executive Director/supervisor
- Providing some level of supervision and support for communications assistants and interns
- Manage all media equipment and the media lab
- Recommend, and administer communication components in program budgets
- Ensure that all program activities (including meetings, field visits and trainings) are well supported with media and communication support.
- Capture, document, and share good human-interest case studies, program lessons for wider dissemination and documentation
- Contribute to the implementation of Global Rights’ Annual Operating Plan, calendar of events, organizational databases, and all records and reports for Global Rights, program stakeholders, and funders.
- All such other related assignments that may be required by the Executive Director.
Qualifications and Experience
- Minimum of Bachelor’s Degree in Communication and Media Science, Journalism, Linguistic Sciences (English), Social Sciences or a related field of study
- Minimum of five years professional experience in a comparable position. Work experience with international organisations
- Good working knowledge of ICT and computer applications (MS Office – Word/ Powerpoint/ Publisher, Adobe - Illustrator/Indesign/Acrobat Pro/Photoshop etc.)
- Intercultural competence and ability to interact with an international internal and external audience;
- Sound knowledge of relationship building, relationship management and networking
- Self-motivated and able to work with a high degree of autonomy
- Demonstrable ability to work to tight deadlines
- Proven project management skills in complex, multi-faceted projects
- Strong conceptual thinking and target group-oriented communication skills
- Excellent communication skills (spoken and written) in English are required.
