International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) - Founded in 2011, the International NGO Safety Organisation (INSO) is a British charity that supports the safety of aid workers by establishing safety coordination platforms in insecure contexts. INSO provides registered NGOs with a range of free services including real-time incident tracking, analytical reports, safety related data and mapping, crisis management support, staff orientations and training.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

 

Job Title: Accountant

Location: Abuja

Description 

  • The key responsibilities of the Accountant will be to support the Finance Manager in maintaining the general accounting. The Accountant works under the supervision of the Finance Manager in collaboration with the Finance Officer, Assistant, and field offices.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure timely process payments based on completed and authorized documentation including suppliers, payroll and taxes, staff expenses claims or operational advances.  Perform and submit daily bank reconciliations.
  • Securely file the accounting and audit documentation. Upload the digital copies referenced chronologically in SharePoint.
  • Support the Finance Manager in coordination of external and internal audits, provide required analysis and documentation
  • Substitute the Finance Officer functions in case of absence or vacancy.
  • Control the level of cash in foreign currencies in the bank, execute foreign exchange transactions, calculate exchange rates, and prepare revaluations.
  • Act as the focal point with the banks and other financial institutions as required. Requests the swift messages and initiates investigations when a transfer is missing. Ensure bank signatures are to date and compliant with procedures. Prepares and submits forms to add or delete authorized signatories.
  • Complete month-end closing according to the agreed schedule, including preparation of journal entries, accruals, prepayments, inter-company transactions, revenue recognition reconciled properly coded and allocated to enable direct import to SUNSYSTEM.
  • Review and analyse monthly with the Finance Officer, the position of the balance sheet accounts. Undertake follow-up and recovery actions on open amounts as agreed with the Finance Officer.
  • Keep up to date an accurate ledger of amounts owed to employees (travel claims, severances, allowances, etc.) as well as recoverable amounts from employees (phone bills, open advances, etc.). Coordinate with the Human Resources for reimbursements or recoveries to be made through the payroll.
  • Carry out other task as assigned by the line manager.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience

  • Preferably at least 2 years of relevant work experience in similar roles with NGOs
  • A professional certificate in finance, accounting, or another relevant field
  • Good literacy skills, both written and verbal
  • Time management skill
  • Experience in financial software systems, and proficiency in Microsoft Office
  • High attention to detail
  • Ability to process large amounts of data
  • In depth knowledge of financial regulations and account processes.
  • Ability to handle budget
  • Donor/contract management experience and donor policy knowledge (preferably ECHO, FCDO, SDC and or BHA)
