Job Summary

  • The IRC is partnering with ECHO under the Pilot Programmatic Partnership to deliver a three-year regional Programme titled ‘Protective and Adaptive Education Approach for Children in Emergencies (PEACE)’ in Nigeria, Niger, and Cameroon between May 2020 and April 2023. In Nigeria, PEACE intends to support more than 94,000 school-aged boys and girls most affected by crisis across Damaturu and  Gujba LGas of Yobe State,  Gwoza and Bama LGAs of Borno State, and Michika and Madagali LGAs of Adamawa State to access and learn in safe educational environments.  
  • Under the supervision of the Education Manager (State), the Senior Education Officer will be responsible for providing technical leadership for and coordination of PEACE education activities in two LGAs.

Position Reports to:  

  • Education Manager

Position directly supervises:

  • 1 Education Officer and 1 M&E Officer

Key Internal Contacts:

  • IRC Child Protection Team, Supply Chain, Finance, HR and Senior Education and Child Protection Manager

Key External Contacts:  

  • Local Government Education Authorities, State SUBEB and SAME

Primary Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the implementation of all PEACE education activities in Michika and Madagali LGAs of Adamawa State.
  • Coordinate training, coaching and ongoing support of teachers, tutors and learning facilitators in order to improve instructional practices in literacy, numeracy and social and emotional skills.
  • Ensure technical coordination of LGA-level activities related to teacher education and obtain support from local government authorities as needed.
  • Provide technical supervision and guidance to Education Officer(s) in the LGA(s).
  • Promote the quality of teacher education activities by setting up quality assurance mechanisms and checks in collaboration with other staff.
  • Represent the project in major LGA meetings, and local communities’ events as appropriate.
  • Provide supportive supervision to non-formal learning facilitators and local partners.
  • Provide regular written and verbal reports on education activities to Education Manager.
  • Facilitate identification, selection and training of learning facilitators and tutors for the intervention.
  • Monitor progress towards the objectives and intended outputs pertaining to teacher education using routine data, spot checks, observation, and other methodologies.
  • Any other duties as assigned by the supervisor to enable and develop IRC education programs.

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education, Education Psychology, Social Work, Human Development, or a relevant field or equivalent is required. 
  • A Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Classroom teaching at the primary school level preferred.
  • Flexibility, commitment, work ethics, and team spirit.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Fluency in English required; Hausa/Kanuri proficiency preferred.
  • Computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • At least four years of experience working in the education sector (including teaching, teacher training, and materials design) with an international or civil society organization.
  • Experience in direct implementation of education programming in conflict or post-conflict contexts.  
  • Strong knowledge in social and emotional learning and/or child psychology/child development preferred.
  • Strong understanding of the educational context in North-East Nigeria.
