Nuru Nigeria is a locally Led NGO with affiliates in the US, Kenya, Ethiopia and Burkina Faso. Nuru equips local leaders with tools and knowledge to lead their communities out of extreme poverty by integrating impact programs that address the most prevalent and fundamental challenges of extreme poverty around four areas of need: Hunger, Inability to Cope with Financial Shocks, Preventable Disease and Death, Lack of Access to Quality Education for Children. Nuru Nigeria design training-based poverty solutions that promote self-reliance and service-mindedness to enable local leaders to continue scaling impact long after Nuru Nigeria staff haveexited the project

Job Title: Research Assistant

Location: Borno
Employment Type: Full-time

Job Summary

  • The Research Assistant will be responsible for primary data collection during surveys, assessments, and qualitative studies such as FGD & KII, support in building the capacity of farmers targeted at improving farmers’ livelihood, and collaborate with the program team to organise, coordinate and report farmer association activities from Nuru Nigeria communities of intervention.

Job Responsibilities
Data Collection:

  • Support Nuru Nigeria M&E unit in the collection of primary data during surveys, assessments, and qualitative studies such as FGD, KII etc in Borno
  • Support in conducting farm monitoring activities.

Data Quality:

  • Ensuring that Nuru Nigeria data collection activities are carried out in line with standard guidelines.
  • Perform all required data quality checks as instructed during data collection.

Documentation:

  • Proper records and documentation of all study materials & attendance sheets.
  • Daily updates on activity progress
  • Program support.

Community Engagement:

  • Interface between the community and the organization to promote organizational goals and ensure close integration of the intervention in the community to ensure community ownership, community led intervention.
  • Conduct community engagements when Nuru Nigeria staff are unavailable to physically attend field activities.
  • Conduct step down training to farmers.
  • Support in mobilizing community members for Nuru Nigeria activities.
  • Relay up-to-date security information about events in NN intervention communities and its environ as accurate as possible to Nuru Nigeria security focal person/backstop
  • Perform other responsibilities as assigned by your supervisor.

Qualifications and Job Requirements

  • HND / Bachelor's Degree in Management, Sciences, Social Research, Development Studies, Linguistics or a related field and 6 months of experience in data collection OR Diploma Plus 2 years of experience in data collection using surveys, focus groups, or interviews
  • Resident and familiarity with the terrain in the Northeast Nigeria
  • Proven interest & commitment to humanitarian and development principles and demonstrable understanding of conflict/post conflict development contexts.
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Experience using and reading maps.
  • Previous experience as an Enumerator or Research Assistant working with NGOs.
  • Excellent computer applications skills. Particularly MS Word and Excel programs.
  • Experience using Mobile data collection platforms.
  • Experience leading teams of enumerators.
  • Experience in facilitating adult learning.
  • Demonstrated ability to build rapport and comply with ethical research in the field.
  • Team player with positive attitude
  • Flexibility in a fast-paced, evolving work environment
  • Good communication and public speaking skills
  • Ability to work under pressure, independently and with limited supervision.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate in both office and field settings.

Preferred:

  • Babur, Hausa and English fluency
  • Experience using and reading maps
  • Experience leading teams of enumerators
  • Conduct Key Informant Interviews (KIIs) and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs)
  • Experience in facilitating adult learning
  • Previous experience as an Enumerator or Research Assistant working with NGOs
  • Excellent computer applications skills. Particularly MS Word and Excel programs.
  • Experience using Mobile data collection platforms
