Quality Assurance / Quality Control Manager at Nigerdock


Nigerdock is a leading Nigerian maritime group with operations in port terminal services, ship repairs and EPC fabrication. The company is located at Snake Island Integrated Free Zone in the main port of Lagos and serves customers in the shipping, logistics, marine and energy sectors.

We are recruiting to fill the position below:

 

Job Title: Quality Assurance / Quality Control Manager

Location: Lagos
Reporting to: General Manager Operations - Shipyard

The Role

  • The QA/QC Manager oversees and ensures the shipyard operations meet the highest quality standards.
  • He will be responsible for managing the overall Quality Management System (QMS), supervising inspection processes, coordinating Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Ultrasonic Testing (UTM), managing UTM reporting software, conducting audits, ensuring client satisfaction, and supporting procurement in supplier evaluation.
  • He will play a pivotal role in delivering quality, safety, and compliance in all ship repair activities while maintaining a clear focus on continuous improvement.

Personal reporting directly to this role:

  • QA/QC Coordinator, Welding Inspector, NDT Officer, QA/QC Material Traceability, Data Controller

Responsibilities
Quality Management System (QMS):

  • Develop, implement, and continuously improve the Quality Management System (QMS) to ensure compliance with international standards (ISO 9001, UTM, and other relevant certifications).
  • Review and ensure proper documentation practices in line with QMS guidelines.
  • Manage and enforce internal quality assurance processes across all stages of ship construction, repair, and maintenance and other Nigerdock Business Units.
  • Conduct internal audits to ensure that all activities and departments are adhering to quality procedures and standards.

Inspection Activities:

  • Supervise and guide the activities of inspectors ensuring they perform their tasks accurately and following approved methods and regulations.
  • Monitor the quality control inspection processes for incoming materials, in-process activities, and final products.
  • Verify the calibration and performance of inspection equipment.
  • Lead the final quality inspection of finished ships, making sure all systems, structural components, and coatings meet contractual and regulatory standards.
  • Ensure that non-conformities are documented, investigated, and corrective actions are implemented.

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) & Ultrasonic Testing (UTM):

  • Oversee the planning, execution, and documentation of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) and Ultrasonic Testing (UTM) procedures.
  • Review results and provide direction on corrective actions if defects are found.
  • Coordinate with NDT/UTM specialists to schedule testing for critical components and ensure timely and accurate reporting.
  • Ensure that qualified NDT and UTM technicians are performing tests in compliance with standards, specifications, and codes.
  • Manage UTM reporting software, ensuring accurate and timely documentation, reporting, and analysis of testing data.

Welding Inspection:

  • Supervise and manage welding inspection processes, ensuring all welding activities adhere to quality standards and specifications.
  • Review and approve welding procedures, welder qualifications, and inspections for weld integrity.
  • Monitor the proper application of welding materials, techniques, and procedures.
  • Ensure that welding non-conformities are addressed and that corrective actions are taken to maintain structural integrity.

Auditing & Compliance:

  • Lead external and internal audits to evaluate compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and contractual obligations.
  • Act as the main liaison during external audits and inspections, addressing auditor questions and facilitating all required documentation and procedures.
  • Ensure timely closure of audit findings and ensure continuous monitoring of corrective actions.
  • Keep updated with changes in regulations and industry standards and ensure the company adapts to those changes accordingly.

Client Satisfaction & Communication:

  • Serve as the main point of contact for clients on quality-related matters, addressing any concerns or queries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Conduct regular meetings with clients to update them on project quality status, milestones, and any potential issues.
  • Facilitate the preparation and presentation of quality documentation and reports to clients.
  • Ensure the final product meets or exceeds the client's expectations and specifications.
  • Review and address client feedback on quality, ensuring any non-conformances or concerns are resolved swiftly.

Team Leadership and Supervision:

  • Supervise, mentor, and train the QA/QC team, providing guidance to inspectors, technicians, and other staff as needed.
  • Ensure continuous improvement through training programs, fostering a culture of quality and attention to detail across all teams.
  • Allocate resources efficiently and ensure that the team meets deadlines and quality requirements for each project.

Supplier Evaluation & Procurement Support:

  • Support procurement teams in the evaluation of suppliers, ensuring that materials, equipment, and components meet quality standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Work closely with suppliers to address any quality issues, ensuring prompt resolution and continued adherence to specifications.
  • Participate in supplier audits and assessments to verify quality control measures and capabilities.
  • Assist in reviewing supplier qualifications, certifications, and past performance.

Reporting & Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate records of quality activities, including inspections, tests, audits, and corrective actions.
  • Prepare and present detailed quality reports for senior management, highlighting key issues, trends, and areas for improvement during Nigerdock Full system audit.
  • Ensure that all quality-related documentation is stored and archived following QMS and company requirements.

Continuous Improvement & Risk Management:

  • Continuously monitor and assess quality metrics, identifying opportunities for improvement in processes, procedures, and resources.
  • Evaluate and mitigate risks related to quality, safety, and compliance, ensuring that proactive measures are in place.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing quality, reducing waste, and improving operational efficiency.

Requirements

  • University Graduate or equivalent in relevant fields of study.
  • Valid Welding Inspection Certificate (CWI/CSWIP), Valid NDT Certificate (UT, MPI, DPI, RT), QMS Certificate (ISO 9001:2015).
  • Ability to interpret Vessel /Piping Drawing.
  • A good team player with the autonomy and motivation to produce individually.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels.
  • Flexible approach to work.
  • Ability to work to deadlines and quickly assimilate information/instructions.
  • Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information discreetly.
  • Active leadership in QA/QC, health & safety, people, responsibility and integrity
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD, Knowledge of IACS rules(Class Rules for repair of vessels).
  • More than 5 years of experience as a QA/QC Manager in Shipyard operations or related field.
  • Ability to work with stakeholders to assess potential risks.
  • Analytical skills to evaluate existing tools and databases and provide software solutions recommendations.
  • High-level written and verbal communication skills.
