Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international, private, non-governmental, non-profit humanitarian organization. Our organization offers assistance to populations in distress, to victims of natural or man-made disasters, to victims of armed conflict, without discrimination irrespective of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. We have been working in Nigeria since February 1996. A Memorandum of Understanding between Medecins Sans Frontieres and the Federal Government of Nigeria facilitates this. We are at present co-operating with the Federal Ministry of Health, State and Local Government departments of health on various health projects.

Description 

  • We are looking to fill one (1) Nurse Position in our Sokoto Noma & Emergency Response Project.

Main Objective and Responsibility of the Position

  • Provide nursing care, treatment and follow-up for children suffering from severe malnutrition, according to MSF TFP (ITFC/ATFC/SFP) protocols, universal hygienic standards and other procedures, in order to ensure a good delivery of care and improve their nutritional conditions.

General Accountabilities

  • Implementing and following at all times the universal hygiene standards, security rules and other protocols and procedures regarding nursing and children nutrition matters.
  • Ensuring proper functioning of the Therapeutic Program. This includes:
  • Daily collecting the number of new admissions and exits and to check the attendance
  • Calculating the quantity of food needed for the day based on the number of children registered
  • Providing advice and inform children’s families about everything concerning the hospitalization, participate in the health education of the mothers and/or treatment process.
  • Controlling all pharmacy, food, and medical equipment (carrying out inventories, checking its quality and its functioning, storage conditions, doing follow-up of expired drugs, etc.)
  • Carrying-out and supervise administrative procedures and documents (fill in patients files, forms, statistics, etc.), ensure an appropriate written/oral handover, and report any problematic situations and cases arising.
  • Performing minor maintenance and cleaning of the biomedical equipment following user manual and protocols. Alerting the supervisor in case of malfunctioning of any device.
  • Ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, detecting the priority acute cases, carrying out first aid care when necessary and referring them to the doctor if necessary.
  • Carrying-out all patient’s related tasks for the admission, weighing and measuring the children, identifying the degree and types of malnutrition, administration (patient card, register) etc.
  • Ensuring that medical and nutritional care, properly delivered to the patients and to daily follow the evolution of the patients.
  • Carrying-out consultations to children and their parents, undertaking a complete clinical examination of children, looking for associated pathologies, drawing up nutritional surveillance forms and milk cards, providing required vaccination, etc.
  • Carrying-out surveillance and follow-up of patients’ medical and nutritional evolution, identifying possible emergency situations arising and keeping doctors informed if necessary.

MSF Section / Context-Specific Accountabilities

  • Carrying-out all patients’ related tasks for the admission, weighing and measuring the Children, identifying the degree and types of malnutrition, administration (patient card, register,) etc.
  • Performing minor maintenance and cleaning of the biomedical equipment following protocols. Alert the supervisor in case of malfunctioning of any device.
  • Implement IPC standards and hygiene in the nutrition kitchen and in the ward during nursing and nutrition care activities.
  • Ensure patient therapeutic milk/RUTF are prescribed according to MSF protocol, administered as prescribed and properly documented on chart as administered.
  • Ensure NG tube feeding procedures are explained /education is given to the caregivers on the processes and provide care of the NG tube and oral care after patients feeding.
  • Ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, detecting the priority acute cases, carrying out first aid care when necessary and referring them to the doctor if necessary.
  • Ensuring that nursing and nutritional care, properly delivered to the children suffering from severe acute malnutrition on admission in the ITFC ward and to daily follow the evolution of the patients.
  • Organise and carry out care and treatment according to the doctor’s prescription and MSF protocols and guidelines.
  • Ensure that all children admitted into the ITFC have being vaccinated before exit according to the guideline
  • Ensure that all patients information is recorded properly on the patients card during admission and discharge.
  • Preparation of therapeutic milk for SAM patients, to ensure protocol is followed and standard hygiene practice is adhered
  • Participate in the medical and mortality review meetings.
  • Report any medical incident during your shift to your line manager
  • Ensure a good working collaboration with the staff of the Ministry of health.
  • Particpate in the data collection processes/documentation.Ensure data confidentiality.
  • Providing information to Children families about process of hospitalization, and participate in the Health education of the mothers and/or treatment process.
  • Calculate the quantity of Therapeutic milk needed for the day based on the number of children registered and make appropriate request. Track daily and weekly consumption.
  • Carrying-out administrative procedures and documentation (fill in patients’ files, forms, statistics, etc.), ensure an appropriate written/oral handover, and report any problematic situations and cases arising.

Requirements (Qualifications / Experience / Knowledge)

Education:

  • Nursing diploma with nutritional training essential

Experience:

  • 2-year experience minimum as a Nurse or in clinical work.
  • Minimum of one year of experience in any Nutritional Programme.
  • ITFC experience is an asset.

Languages:

  • Mission language essential. Local language is desirable.

Knowledge:

  • Essential computer literacy (word, excel).

Competencies:

  • People Management, Commitment to MSF principles, Teamwork and result oriented.
