Job Title: HSE Officer
Location: Owode Onirin, Lagos
Employment Type: Full Time
Job Summary
- The HSE Officer is responsible for ensuring that all health, safety, and environmental (HSE) regulations and policies are implemented and adhered to within the PET recycling plant.
- This role involves conducting risk assessments, developing safety protocols, monitoring environmental compliance, and providing training to employees on safety practices.
- The HSE Officer ensures a safe working environment while promoting sustainability and environmental protection in line with company goals.
Key Responsibilities
Health and Safety Management:
- Conduct risk assessments and safety audits to identify potential hazards and implement corrective actions.
- Develop, implement, and monitor safety policies, procedures, and training programs to ensure compliance with occupational health and safety regulations.
- Conduct safety training and awareness programs for all employees, including fire safety, PPE usage, and emergency response drills.
- Investigate incidents, accidents, or near-misses and prepare detailed reports to determine root causes and recommend preventive measures.
- Ensure the availability and proper use of safety equipment (PPE, first aid, etc.).
Environmental Compliance:
- Monitor and ensure compliance with environmental regulations specific to the PET recycling industry, including waste management, air emissions, and water usage.
- Conduct environmental audits and coordinate with relevant authorities to obtain necessary permits and certifications.
- Promote recycling and sustainability initiatives within the company.
- Develop and implement SDGs (sustainable development goals) and environmental policies aimed at minimizing the environmental impact of the recycling process, including proper handling of hazardous materials.
Waste Management:
- Oversee the management and disposal of waste materials, ensuring that they are handled in an environmentally safe and compliant manner.
- Monitor and track waste segregation and recycling practices to maximize resource recovery.
Documentation and Reporting:
- Maintain accurate records of safety and environmental incidents, training sessions, audits, and inspections.
- Prepare and submit HSE reports to management and regulatory authorities as required.
- Stay updated on local, national, and international HSE regulations and ensure the company remains compliant.
Team Collaboration:
- Collaborate with the operations and maintenance teams to identify and address safety and environmental risks.
- Work with external HSE auditors, consultants, and regulators to ensure compliance and continuous improvement.
Continuous Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for improving safety and environmental performance and implement initiatives to reduce risks and enhance sustainability.
- Keep abreast of industry best practices in HSE management and promote their adoption within the company.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor's Degree in Environmental Science, Occupational Health, Safety Management, or a related field.
- Certifications such as NEBOSH, IOSH, or equivalent are highly desirable.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills.
- Proficiency in MS Office and HSE management software.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience as an HSE Officer, preferably in the recycling or manufacturing industry.
- In-depth knowledge of HSE regulations, particularly in the recycling or plastics industry.
