  • The seven-year PLANE project, funded by the Department for International Development (DfID), is a flagship basic education programme to be implemented in Nigeria starting next year. The Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) project will directly support improved learning of foundational skills for children in Kano, Kaduna and Jigawa states and indirectly benefit children in those states and nationally, to enable better learning outcomes including for marginalized groups of children.
  • Creative is seeking a Hausa Advisor to provide overall technical oversight and guidance to the project to improve reading instruction in local language.
Reporting & Supervision:
  • This position is housed in Abuja, Nigeria, reporting to the Leading for Results Lead.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Supervise the production of all project-supported reading material, all project-supported trainings in reading, all teacher and classroom supervision and monitoring and all student testing efforts;
  • Ensure complementarity of activity approaches in reading across the project activity states,
  • Liaise with government representatives and technicians on technical matters and bear ultimate responsibility for ensuring that children in project schools achieve improved outcomes in reading; and
  • Work directly with a Hausa language expert (particularly if the advisor is not conversant and fluent in written and spoken Hausa).
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Master’s Degree in Education, preferably with a specialty in early grade reading;
  • At least six (6) years of experience in programs in sub-Saharan Africa that work specifically to improve early grade reading;
  • Prior experience with the development of early grade reading materials, training programs, classroom monitoring protocols, and tests and assessments, including EGRA;
  • Prior experience with supporting civil-society based monitoring of reading outcomes;
  • Professionally proficient and fluent in written and spoken English;
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; and
  • Fluency in written Hausa is preferred but not required.

  • Creative is seeking a Materials Development Advisor who will be responsible for the development of reading and instructional materials, ensuring that the content of the materials developed is effective.
  • S/he will also be responsible for leading the production of multimedia classroom and instructional materials to ensure they adhere to the content developed by the Ministry of Education.
Reporting & Supervision:
  • The Materials Development Advisor will report to the Learning for Results Lead.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Review and develop teaching manuals and guides for in-service training that will be used to roll out the teacher trainings;
  • Develop training materials that include how to teach the component skills of reading, classroom-based reading assessment, and methodology for teaching fundamental reading skills to children, as well as oral reading skills development in Hausa;
  • Ensure that all pedagogical materials align with government requirements and build on existing training materials as recommended by the Ministry of Education;
  • Ensure availability of materials available in innovative IT formats to support self-learning where possible; and
  • Collaborate with the other projects to ensure linkages and shared approaches and materials.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s Degree in education or related pedagogically oriented field preferred;
  • At least four (4) years of experience in work specifically to improve education programming directed to rural, ethno-linguistic underserved populations;
  • At least six (6) years of general work experience;
  • Prior experience with supporting family/community engagement of education outcomes;
  • Professional proficiency in written and spoken and English;

Primary Responsibilities
  • Support, design, and develop Early Grade Reading (EGR) curriculum teaching and learning materials (TLM) including student textbooks teacher guides student work books continuous assessment books;
  • Support the scope and sequencing drafting and field-testing refinement piloting assessing and revision of the EGR TLM;
  • Provide technical support for the development of various evaluation tools to be used for qualitative and quantitative assessment of EGR learning materials and carry out various evaluations using those instruments as required;
  • Support various capacity development programs provided to improve and upgrade the capacity of the Ministry of Education (MOE) to plan design develop and implement EGR curriculum in the system;

Primary Responsibilities The English Language Advisor will:
  • Coordinate the development of English early literacy standards with government stakeholders and international STTA, ensuring alignment with Hausa standards and with overall literacy expectations for Nigeria;
  • Provide leadership for the development and/or adaptation of English-language curricula and instructional materials, in coordination with the ICT and materials development specialist;
  • Develop, implement, and support teacher, school leader, and local government authority staff training in English early literacy methods and materials, in coordination with the teacher training specialist;
  • Coordinate with staff in state offices to ensure the fidelity and quality of English program implementation at the school level;
  • Coordinate with the monitoring and evaluation team to develop knowledge-sharing efforts related to English early literacy, including communication briefs and presentations on achievements and lessons learned; and
  • Coordinate with the project director and home office technical team to share lessons learned, problem-solve, and ensure that work in the field meets the highest standards of quality and is consistent with the state of the art in early grade literacy.
Required Skills & Qualifications
  • Master's degree and over five (5) years of related experience in standards development, teacher training, and materials development in early grade reading and writing in English;
  • Experience working with complex projects and collaborating with professional peers on joint products;
  • Knowledge of and experience with primary school context;
  • Knowledge of and experience with English language curriculum;
  • Teacher training and teacher coaching experience;
  • Teaching/learning materials development experience;
  • Team player and willingness to learn;
