We are recruiting to fill the position below:
Job Title: Conflict Analyst - Nigeria
Location: Maiduguri, Borno
Duration: 12 months
Position Summary
- S/he will work together with and in coordination with the respective Project Managers and Coordinators. The position will be based in Maiduguri with frequent travel to the fields across the North east.
- Reporting Line: S/He will report to the Head of Office North East with a functional reporting line to the Senior Program and Policy Analyst.
- The Northeast Conflict Analyst will keep track of the unfolding social, political and conflict dynamics in the Northeast Nigeria and provide analytical real time conflict analysis.
- S/he will provide periodic and thematic conflict analysis reports to inform the program, partners, donors and other stakeholders.
- S/he will be responsible for the implementation of Search for Common Ground’s conflict-sensitivity engagements in selected project states and contribute to achieving the annual goals and objectives of Search’s Policy Analysis and Advocacy team.
- The Northeast Conflict Analyst will directly report to and be line-managed by the Head of Office Northeast based in Maiduguri and work under the functional supervision of the Senior Program and Policy Analyst based in Abuja.
Roles and Responsibilities
- Conduct required conflict assessments and conflict scans in the northeast Nigeria.
- Carry out these two types of assessments on future projects.
- Prepare briefings or updates based on the review and analysis of news, incident reports from the staff and partners, interviews with key informants, and information collected from SFCG Nigeria’s programs and early warning system;
- Prepare specific conflict analysis reports on a periodic basis, either thematic or geographic focus based in the need and relevance;
- Serve as a hub for reporting of incidents from staff and partners as required;
- Liaise with government, civil society, security actors, donors, media, UN bodies, and the private sector as needed to further improve information in the reports
- Carry out specific research and studies as required;
- Contribute to the proposal and report writing processes by writing the context analysis section;
- Contribute to developing curriculum and implementing the training on “conflict sensitivity and do no harm” to staff, partners and local stakeholders;
As job descriptions cannot be exhaustive, the position holder may be required to undertake other duties that are broadly in line with the above key duties.
Qualifications
Education:
- Master’s degree in Conflict and Peace-Building Studies, International Relations, Political Sciences or related fields;
Required Experience:
- Experience of partnership development and management
- Experience of working in conflict-prone areas in Africa or Nigeria
- Experience in both development and humanitarian contexts is considered as an added advantage
- A minimum of professional experience carrying out conflict analysis, research, training on conflict sensitivity and do no harm;
- A minimum of 2 years’ experience working in an NGO in similar capacity
- One to three years of training experience
- Experience of peace-building approach
Other Relevant Requirements:
- Demonstrated skills of using different conflict analysis frameworks;
- Deep understanding of the social, political and conflict dynamics in Northern Nigeria;
- Excellent analytical and writing skills;
- Knowledge using qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis tools;
- Knowledge of early warning systems;
- A demonstrated commitment to high professional ethical standards and a diverse workplace; and
- Ability to prioritize, plan and organize workflow to tight timeframes, handle multiple tasks, and be flexible with changing priorities.
